Ruthven Park brings the landscape diversity of Haldimand County to life: the grounds are free to visit and explore, and the property covers nearly 1,500 acres. Carolinian forest, wetlands, shoreline and aquatic habitats along the Grand River, meadows and actively farmed agricultural land shape this place. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

River Landscapes and Forests

Beyond Ruthven Park, Haldimand County is home to a variety of Carolinian habitats. These include forests, prairies and tallgrass savannas, wetlands, streams, shorelines and other aquatic habitats. One specific forest area is the Ruigrok Tract in Dunnville: it consists of a large, contiguous interior forest with several tree species, including White Ash, White Oak, Red Oak, Swamp Oak and Hard Maple. Visitors are encouraged to release their catches when fishing there.

Trails with Different Features

Haldimand County offers more than 40 kilometres of trails and paths for outdoor recreation. The examples vary in length, route type and surface. The Cayuga Grand Vista is a 3.2-kilometre loop for hiking, cycling and walking. It runs along Munsee Street, Highway 3 and King George Street, among other roads, and crosses the Grand River. The Jarvis Lions Walking Trail is shorter: this 1.2-kilometre trail in Jarvis Lions Park is paved, lit and fully accessible.

The Townsend Recreation Trail is four kilometres long, paved and lit. This multi-use walking trail runs through Townsend and crosses Nanticoke Creek. A much longer option is the 12.2-kilometre Gypsum Mine Tract, a multi-use trail with sections through a natural area and along roads; it connects to the Chippewa Trail and the Rotary Riverside Trail. The natural-surface multi-use Blue Heron Way is 1.6 kilometres long, running from Hutchinson Road to the Gord Harry Trail and onward toward Niagara. Roadside parking is available.

If you are looking for a trail along the Grand River, the Rotary Riverside Trail offers another option: it is six kilometres long, follows a linear route and runs parallel to the river downstream from Caledonia. The Haldimand section of the Waterfront Trail, in turn, runs along quiet country roads lined with waterfront homes and through Dunnville. These details make it possible to compare the routes based on specific features rather than choosing by length alone.

Museums and Heritage

Haldimand Museums includes three museums offering exhibitions, workshops, holiday camps and school programs. The Heritage Centre presents exhibitions, special events and programs for all ages year-round. In Caledonia, the Edinburgh Square Heritage and Cultural Centre is housed in a building constructed by John Turner in 1857, formerly the town hall and jail.

In Cayuga, the Nicholas Log Cabin is permanently on display as part of the Haldimand County Museum and Archive. It is used to share what life was like in pioneer times; museum objects complement the experience. The No. 6 RCAF Museum in Dunnville offers a different historical focus: since 2003, it has preserved artifacts and training aircraft from the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Together, these sites represent different themes, from local community and pioneer history to aviation history.

Seasonal Experiences and Trip Planning

Purple Haven in Canfield combines nature trails with seasonal offerings. During lavender bloom, you can explore the lavender fields on foot and cut your own lavender; there are also flowers available for picking. In fall, pumpkin picking is among the farm's offerings. In Dunnville, the Farmers' Market offers locally grown food during its operating season. Because seasonal offerings and the market's operating hours are subject to conditions, check in advance what will be available during your visit.

You can then consider the location of your accommodation in relation to the activities you actually plan to do. The trails listed offer comparable information about length and route type, but they do not all have the same features.
