1,025 hectares across 27 separate areas: the Middlesex County Forest gives the nature theme in Middlesex County a concrete setting. For orientation, the Middlesex County Trails Guide maps trails throughout the county and identifies activities in the individual conservation areas and parks. This lets you take the designated options in each area into account when planning.
Forest Rules and Nature Trails
Vehicles are prohibited in all forests owned by Middlesex County. This expressly applies to motorcycles, ATVs, snowmobiles, cars and trucks. This restriction is important to keep in mind when planning a visit to one of the county forests.
Joany's Woods: Scenery and Trail Lengths
Joany's Woods is located near Sylvan, in the Municipality of North Middlesex. The landscape includes hardwood swamps, mature upland and lowland forests, brush areas and larger plantations. This means you can take in several distinct types of landscape here, rather than just one type of forest.
Two public trails run through the area: the 4.4 km Ivey Trail and the 3.2 km Inch Trail. The Inch Trail is therefore 1.2 km shorter; the two routes provide a clear comparison of their lengths for planning. Access at the southern end is via County Road 7 (Elginfield Road), and at the northern end via Boot Hill Road.
There is also an opportunity to paddle nearby: you can launch canoes or kayaks from a boat launch.
Two Ways to Explore Cultural Heritage
The Lucan Area Heritage & Donnelly Museum offers presentations about the Donnellys, the Wilberforce Settlement and local history. There are also guided tours of the museum and historic buildings. This brings these topics together in a guided museum visit.
By contrast, the Middlesex Heritage Trail shares stories on signs about struggles for sovereignty, pioneer settlements, the once-thriving oil industry, historic buildings and events of the past. The museum and trail therefore also differ in format: presentations and tours are central at the museum, while stories along a signed route take center stage on the trail.
Maple Syrup and Regional Drinks
Seasonal culinary experiences in Middlesex County include sugar bush tours. They feature tastings of artisan maple syrup varieties and local products, as well as insights into the history of syrup production. The experience combines tasting with learning about how maple syrup is made.
The beverage scene includes fresh farm-produced cider, craft beers and small-batch spirits, along with related tasting experiences. These offer different points of interest for trip planning than the maple syrup tradition: you can choose between the tasting options mentioned and their respective themes.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
If you are looking for a hotel, first decide whether nature, cultural heritage or culinary experiences will be your main focus. Trails, museum tours, stories on signs and tastings appeal to different interests.
