Arbanasi lies on a high plateau, about 4 km from Veliko Tarnovo. Historic residential houses and church art give the town a distinct cultural focus. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up whether you are particularly interested in residential architecture, church architecture, or mural painting.

From Residential Houses to Frescoes

Notable examples of residential architecture in Arbanasi include houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Konstantsaliev and Hadzhiiliev houses. There are also fortified houses enclosed by high stone walls. Residential houses and fortifications thus represent two distinct aspects of the architectural heritage.

Seven churches were built in Arbanasi between the mid-16th and late 18th centuries, and were repeatedly expanded and decorated with frescoes. At the Nativity Church, the walls and vaults are covered with more than 2,000 square metres of mural paintings. An inscription at St George Church gives 1709 as the year the mural painting was completed. The comparison is specific: at the Nativity Church, the extent of the decoration is the focus, while at St George, an inscription dates its completion. The year refers to the mural painting, not to the construction of the church. In chronological terms, the history of church construction began earlier: it dates back to the mid-16th century, while the houses mentioned date from the 17th and 18th centuries. The two periods overlap in the 18th century.
