In Stara Zagora, archaeological remains, performing arts, and extensive green spaces come together with a range of leisure activities. The Stara Zagora Tourist Information Office provides information on tourist attractions in the municipality, including museums and natural attractions, as well as transport information for travel to, from, and within the city.

Cultural heritage across several eras

The Museum of Religions architectural complex is located in the centre of Stara Zagora. Its archaeological layers include a ritual pit from the early Iron Age, a sanctuary of the Thracian Horseman, a medieval Christian cemetery church, and a Muslim temple. Preserved cult objects are displayed in the complex. The site underwent extensive conservation and restoration in 2011. The history of the site also includes the Eski Mosque: its architecture is recognised as a national cultural monument from antiquity and the Middle Ages, and its murals are of national significance.

The Neolithic Dwellings Museum displays the exceptionally well-preserved remains of a two-storey residential building from the beginning of the 6th millennium BC. It also features prehistoric pottery, figurines, jewellery and tools, as well as human figures made of marble. The building remains and the objects on display offer different perspectives: one brings the form of an early dwelling to life, while the others show different types of objects from the same prehistoric era.

The Stara Zagora State Opera also holds a special place in Bulgarian cultural history: it was Bulgaria’s first opera house outside the capital. Its repertoire includes opera, operetta, ballet, children’s performances, and concerts. The Museum of the Horse and Equestrian Sports offers a different historical perspective, displaying authentic carriages and wagons used by Prince Alexander Battenberg, Prince Ferdinand, and Tsar Boris III.

Parks, animals, and activity

Metropolitan Metodiy Kusev Park, also known as Ayazmoto, covers 3,200 decares and is used for walks, relaxation, and leisure. The park is home to centuries-old cypress trees, an avenue of fountains, and the Chapel of St. Theodore Tyron. The Rope Garden is also located in the park and is listed as a children’s attraction. A safety briefing is mandatory there, and professional supervision is provided. Those interested in horse riding can find riding lessons and trail rides at Ahal Horse Base.

Stara Zagora Zoo is home to more than 400 specimens from around 80 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians. It also offers school trips and birthday programmes for children. This makes the zoo a distinct option alongside museums and cultural attractions; the programmes listed are aimed at different occasions. The approximate number of species and number of specimens describe two different aspects of the zoo: the variety of animal species represented and the size of its collection.

Beer history and tasting

The World of Zagorka Beer Museum presents the history of one of Bulgaria’s oldest breweries and explains beer-making processes and technologies. The tour of the World of Zagorka Beer ends with a tasting of unfiltered live beer. This focus combines an introduction to brewing techniques with a concluding tasting experience.
