Pavel Banya lies between the Stara Planina and Sredna Gora mountains; the Koprinka Reservoir and the Tundzha River are nearby. The mineral water tradition shapes the town’s character, while seasonal rose blooms, culture and nature offer other perspectives to consider when planning your trip.

Mineral Water and Spa History

The mineral water in Pavel Banya is 61 °C and has a pH of 7.6. The modern use of the mineral waters began in 1923, when two baths were built. All seven mineral springs in the deposit were tapped during the periods 1930–1931 and 1939–1940. The dates mark different stages: the start of modern use and the later tapping of the springs. Balneotherapy is part of the town’s tourist offering; rural tourism is also among the types promoted there.

Seasons and Rose Blossoms

Summers in Pavel Banya are hot. Winters are moderately cold, but the snow cover lasts only a short time. The seasonal comparison between spring and autumn is specific: autumn is longer, drier and warmer than spring. Pavel Banya is especially popular in May and June, when the oil-bearing roses bloom and fill the air with their fragrance. The rose harvest is demanding, and processing is specialized. When deciding when to travel, both the differences between the seasons and the special rose bloom in May and June can help guide you.

At Koprinka Reservoir

The area where the Koprinka Reservoir empties lies two kilometers from Pavel Banya. Camping, picnics, nature walks and water sports are among the possible leisure activities there. Check access and facilities locally. The lake and the Tundzha River add another landscape feature to the town’s location between the two mountain ranges; activities at the reservoir can be distinguished from the mineral water tradition in town.

History and Culture in Town

Archaeological excavations around Pavel Banya’s hot mineral springs uncovered the remains of an ancient city. The town’s more recent history is also reflected in specific dates: the Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God was built by residents after the settlement was founded in 1879 and consecrated on November 21, 1924. The monument to Tsanko Minkov Komitata is also one of Pavel Banya’s attractions. The tourist offering also includes museums, galleries, ethnographic complexes, and archaeological, historical and religious monuments. Alongside the history of the mineral springs, there are other cultural themes to explore, without any single attraction having to define the entire visit.

In the Wider Pavel Banya Destination

More than 5,000 decares of Bulgarian oil-bearing roses are cultivated in the municipality of Pavel Banya. The municipality also has nine operating rose distilleries; two demonstrate traditional rose-distillation methods and are open to tourists. Dimitar Chorbadzhiyski, known as Chudomir, was born in Turia. The ethnographic museum in Turia’s community center preserves a collection on the village’s history and ethnography.

Natural attractions in the wider destination offer their own points of interest: Pirostiyata above Turia consists of three large upright stones and a stone resting on top of them that contains water even during a drought. The Kichest gabăr near Turia, a European hornbeam over 700 years old, is considered a natural attraction. In the Central Balkan Mountains, Rusalka Hut lies just above Tazha and near the entrance to Central Balkan National Park.
