A Thracian tomb, museums covering regional and art history, and insights into the rose-growing tradition give Kazanlak a range of cultural highlights. Thracian Heritage and Museum History
The Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak is located in Tyulbeto Park in Kazanlak and dates to around the end of the 4th century BC. Its wall paintings depict Thracian burial rituals and culture. In 1979, the tomb was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This gives a visit a clear historical focus: the tomb and its paintings are at the center.
The Iskra History Museum was founded in 1901 by Petar Topuzov and is considered one of Bulgaria’s oldest, richest, and best-known regional museums. The Rose Museum is part of Iskra and is housed in a new building in Rozarium Park. It is considered unique of its kind. Visitors can buy rose oil, rose oil products, cosmetics, rose liqueur, and souvenirs related to the rose-growing tradition there.
Everyday Life, Roses, and Art
The Kulata Ethnographic Complex is located in Kazanlak’s oldest quarter. It preserves buildings that retain the quarter’s traditional character. The exhibition focuses on the domestic life and worldview of Kazanlak’s residents around the mid-19th century. The rose-growing tradition can also be experienced firsthand here: visitors can watch rose-distillation demonstrations, sample essential oils, and try culinary products made from the rose used for oil production. In this way, insights into life at the time are paired with demonstrations and tastings.
The Petko Staynov House is located in the composer’s birthplace in Kazanlak. The exhibition covers his life and his symphonic, choral, academic, public, and publishing work. The Ahinora Museum offers a different focus: one permanent exhibition is dedicated to Ivan Milev’s paintings, while a second hall hosts temporary exhibitions. Ahinora is considered the world’s first museum dedicated to a single painting.
Photography and visual art take center stage at the Museum of Photography and Contemporary Visual Arts. Opened in 2015, the museum is intended as a place for visitors, photographers, photography enthusiasts, residents, and guests. The Shipkoff House, meanwhile, devotes its halls to episodes from the history of the Shipkoff family. At a handmade souvenir workshop, visitors can take part in the creative process and make their own souvenirs.
Getting Around and Routes in the Surrounding Area
For trips to tourist destinations, Kazanlak provides information on public transport timetables. Check the timetable for your destination before setting out. A municipal infrastructure description dated March 11, 2021, lists three bicycle routes near Kazanlak that had recently been paved at the time, with a total length of 8.5 kilometers. It also describes a 22-kilometer municipal cycling network with connections to Ovoshchnik, Rozovo, Enina, Krŭn, and Buzovgrad. As this information dates from 2021 and local conditions may change, check the current situation before planning a cycling route.
Nearby, the “Path Through the Ages” starts on the outskirts of Buzovgrad and leads to the megalith above the village. The megalith can be reached in less than 40 minutes at a leisurely walking pace. The path is clearly marked, and rest areas, benches, and pavilions complement the route. The Koprinka Reservoir offers opportunities for fishing and water sports; walking and family outings are also among the options there.
