Early historical sites, an interactive folklore centre and natural attractions offer different ways to experience a trip to Chavdar. The municipality is in Sofia Province, Bulgaria. The village of Chavdar lies between Stara Planina and SĹshtinska Sredna Gora; the Topolnitsa River flows between the mountain ranges. By car, it is about 60 km from Sofia and 120 km from Plovdiv.

Neolithic traces and local traditions

Remains of an Early Neolithic settlement that existed more than 7,000 years ago were discovered by the Topolnitsa River. They formed the basis for the Topolnitsa Archaeological Park. The site includes an exhibition building, reconstructed Early Neolithic houses and workshops. The workshops focus on leatherworking, stone tools and pottery. Overnight stays in the reconstructed houses are also offered at the park; check the current arrangements in advance.

The Chavdar Folklore Centre uses interactive experiences to present the area’s tangible and intangible heritage, including its traditions, knowledge and skills. Video installations, as well as table, computer and mechanical games, explore historical everyday life. In the interactive bread-making activity, visitors grind flour using an authentic hand mill. This offers different ways to experience Chavdar’s culture through archaeological topics and traditional craft techniques.

Architectural history also shapes the village: the Church of St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1883. Its wood carvings were made by craftspeople from Samokov, and the iconostasis was created by master Filip Zograf from Koprivshtitsa. At the entrance to the village stands the Chapel of St. George, built in 1998, near an older church of the same name. The central square is pedestrianised; paths, wooden bridges and arches, fountains, an Alpine garden and a small amphitheatre shape its design. Parking for cars and buses is nearby.

Nature destinations and outdoor activities

The Kazanite natural landmark comprises five small waterfalls. There is also a shelter with barbecue facilities. Kazanite has been designated a natural landmark since 1970 and is included in Bulgaria’s National Register of Natural Landmarks. The municipality offers a paid off-road trip there. If you plan to take this tour, check current availability and booking options beforehand.

The St. Petka eco-trail is 2 km long, reaches an altitude of 639 m and is rated easy. In addition, two cycling routes with different levels of difficulty have been described, though both are still planned: one route around the Topolnitsa River and the St. Petka area is 15.5 km long, rated easy and estimated to take about two hours. The second passes through St. Petka, Kazanite, Domuzdan Tepe and Kyoy Dere. It is 35 km long, rated moderate and planned to take about five hours. Comparing distance, difficulty and estimated time provides practical guidance when choosing a route.

The sports tourism attraction in the St. Petka locality includes two climbing walls, an observation tower and a two-storey rope course; younger visitors can use rope play equipment. The locality also offers e-bike rides, pony rides and a free electric vehicle charging station. If any of these activities is important to your plans, check current availability.

Village life and accommodation

Chavdar maintains a range of cultural traditions, including an old-style wedding ritual, a Kukeri festival, and folk dance and folk song events. Since 2008, the folklore festival “Let’s Sing the Songs of Sredna Gora Together” has been held in the St. Petka locality, bringing together dance and singing groups from across Bulgaria. The annual celebration at the Chapel of St. George also takes place on 6 May. Covered shelters with benches, a stage and a place to prepare food are part of the visitor facilities there. Check dates and specific event arrangements before travelling.

The Chavdar complex in the centre of the municipality brings together a hotel, a tavern, a pastry shop and a grocery store. If you plan to stay there, check current availability.
