Bozhurishte brings together several distinctive themes: Bulgarian aviation history, equestrian sports and an annual flower festival. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between places that are enduring features and events with changing programmes. This will help you decide whether to focus your stay on history and culture or on an event.

Aviation history and cultural life

Bozhurishte is connected with Bulgaria’s aviation and aircraft manufacturing history. The DOGAN (SOKOL) and DAR aircraft were built at the first aviation base. Another aspect of the town’s history concerns its airport: in the 1930s, commercial flights by Lufthansa, Air France, LOT and Aeroflot were handled there. Aircraft manufacturing and civil aviation thus represent different aspects of the local aviation history.

Cultural life also offers several points of interest. NCh Hristo Botev 1934 is a cultural and social centre in Bozhurishte. Local amateur groups and professional actors perform on its stage; the centre also has a summer reading room. Those interested in events and performing arts can find a different way to explore the town’s history here than through aviation.

The Peony and Flowers Festival has been celebrated annually since 1981, traditionally on the last Saturday in May. The festival features Bulgarian folklore and children’s workshops, which have been part of the programme since 2024. The specific programme may vary; if the festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates and programme details in advance. The traditional date provides a guide for planning your trip, but does not replace checking the programme for that year.

Equestrian sports and places in the tourist centre

The General Krum Lekarski equestrian centre hosts national championships and international competitions. The municipal tourism programme for 2024–2028 also lists riding lessons for adults, as well as three outdoor and two indoor arenas there. The centre therefore offers both competitive sport and lessons for adults. If riding lessons are important to you, check the current booking arrangements in advance.

Park Orlite, one of the town’s main visitor attractions, is part of Bozhurishte’s tourist centre. The Bozhura Garden has a children’s playground and food and drink establishments. These two places offer a different focus from aviation history and stage performances: they complement the cultural themes with public spaces to spend time in and options for food and drink. NCh Hristo Botev 1934 also has a summer reading room.

Other places in Bozhurishte Municipality

At the municipal level, distinct cultural and nature themes come into view. Roman stelae were discovered in the churchyard of St George the Victorious Church in Prolesha. Rosoman has an old, restored church dedicated to Saint Nedelya. In Hrabarsko, the medieval Kaleto fortress stands at the Sovat locality on a steep ridge. It has not been developed for visitors or landscaped. These places are points of interest when exploring Bozhurishte Municipality; they should not be confused with facilities in the town of Bozhurishte.

Nature watching is also a feature of the municipality: the rivers and floodplain areas in Bozhurishte Municipality are designated for birdwatching. Waterbirds observed there include herons, cormorants and ducks; sightings are seasonal and variable. Alongside its cultural sites, the municipality thus offers nature experiences whose appeal depends on when you visit.
