The 40 bridges over the Byala River define Sokolovtsi: almost every house on one side of the river is connected to the road by one of them. Because of its many bridges, the village is known regionally as the “Venice of the Rhodopes.” Together with the old Rhodope houses, known for their architecture, the crossings offer a distinctive way to appreciate the village’s building traditions. Visitors to Sokolovtsi can take in not only individual structures but also the relationship between the houses, river and road connections.

Bridges and Building Traditions

An old bridge between Sokolovtsi and Bostina has the characteristic humpback shape of historic Rhodope stone bridges. Some traditional Kyuprii over the Byala have also been preserved. These examples of bridges show different aspects of local building traditions: the distinctive shape of a historic stone structure and traditional crossings that have survived to this day. They add to the many bridges that shape the village and its connection to the road.

Landscape and Surroundings

Gaydarski Kamen is a distinctive rock above Sokolovtsi. The Hubcha karst spring and two Roman bridges are 1.5 km from the village. Check local access conditions before visiting. The Hubcha protected area extends across the territories of Sokolovtsi and Levochevo. Before Hubcha was designated a protected site, the area served as a buffer zone for the Momchilovski Dol reserve. Alongside the bridges, the rock, spring and protected area offer different perspectives on the local landscape.

Culture, Crafts and Hospitality

Sokolovtsi’s traditional village festival is celebrated on Saint Peter’s Day, June 29. If you would like to plan your trip around this recurring date, check the current programme in advance. Sokolovtsi is also historically associated with the Rozhen Folklore Gathering. Residents gathered there for family reunions with bagpipe music and spit-roasted lamb. This historical connection brings together music, communal meals and family gatherings.

Local hosts organise mountain hikes and demonstrate woodcarving and the making of Rhodope terlik slippers. Check in advance whether tours and demonstrations are available. Hosts also prepare regional specialities for visitors; ask beforehand about the specific dishes and their availability. This helps distinguish hiking opportunities and crafts from culinary experiences, without assuming that every host offers the same things.

Getting There and Accommodation

The Smolyan–Rozhen–Plovdiv road passes through Sokolovtsi. A road branches off from there towards Momchilovtsi. Check road conditions before setting out; local conditions on the road towards Momchilovtsi can change. These two road connections help you plan your journey to Sokolovtsi without prescribing a particular order for your visit.

Guesthouses in Sokolovtsi welcome tourists, skiers and visitors to Rozhen, Pamporovo and neighbouring settlements. If you are considering staying in the village, check the availability and services of the accommodation in question before travelling. The visitor groups mentioned range from winter sports guests to people visiting destinations and settlements in the region, so the accommodation that suits your stay depends on your specific needs.
