The August Festival in Pisanitsa
A visit to Pisanitsa can be planned around a fixed date: the annual village gathering takes place on 15 August, the church’s feast day. The celebration includes a communal kurban, traditionally held in the churchyard; visitors are welcome to join. The specific arrangements may vary from year to year. If you are planning your trip around the village gathering, check the details for the relevant year before setting your dates. For travel planning, 15 August is therefore a specific annual date, not a general indication of the season.
Rhodope Cuisine and Getting There
Rhodope dishes include petatnik, Rhodope klin, kolachkove, beans, aprachkove (sarma in cabbage leaves), and cheverme. These culinary references reflect regional cuisine, but they are not a set menu: not every dish will necessarily be available at a particular event. Availability is not guaranteed outside the celebration either.
Pisanitsa is reached via an asphalt road that branches off the Smolyan–Plovdiv road via Rozhen. The road continues towards Hasovitsa; the village is approximately three kilometres from the turn-off. This distance refers to the stretch from the turn-off to Pisanitsa. Road conditions and the route may change, so check the route for your travel date.
Culture and Nature in the Wider Smolyan Destination
In the wider Smolyan destination, the Agushevi Konatsi in Mogilitsa, Smolyan Municipality, are designated a cultural monument of national importance for their artistic and historical significance. This national designation clearly distinguishes this cultural attraction from the annual village gathering in Pisanitsa.
In Stoykite, Smolyan Municipality, the exhibition “The Bagpipe: Ancient and Eternal” showcases bagpipe artistry and the traditional craft of bagpipe-making from all of Bulgaria’s folklore regions. The exhibition combines a museum, an ethnographic art gallery, and an interactive sound installation. The collection opened in 2022; check current access arrangements before your trip.
Near Koshnitsa in the wider Smolyan destination, a marked hiking trail leads to the entrance of Kaleto Cave; rest areas are located along the route. At the cave complex, visitors can also try a 40 m alpine swing jump. The rope is attached at the highest point of the rock arch. Confirm locally whether this activity is available before your trip.
Uhlovitsa Cave is located near Koshnitsa in the wider Smolyan destination. Two lengths are relevant for orientation: the developed section is 330 m long, while the cave measures 460 m in total. A path with 280 metal steps leads to the developed section. These figures therefore refer to different measurements, not two measurements of the same path. Uhlovitsa is approximately 3.5 million years old; its dendritic formations strongly resemble sea corals.
