Nedelino combines a distinctive cultural theme with specific attractions for a stay: the town’s twin singing, a tourist route to St. Nedelya and twelve medieval bridges. This gives you different options for focusing your trip on folklore, cultural heritage or hiking. When planning, the event dates and the current condition of the route are particularly relevant.

Twin Singing and Folklore

Local twin singing is considered a characteristic Rhodope singing tradition and the only example of twin singing in the Rhodopes. Around 350 songs have been collected and transcribed. In addition, the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture declared Nedelino’s twin singing a Living Cultural Treasure of Bulgaria.

A national folklore competition with international participation is devoted to twin singing and folk songs. It is organized by the municipality and the Ministry of Culture. The festival is usually held on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in September; traditionally, events take place in the town’s central square. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the announced event dates in advance.

St. George’s Day is also associated with a local custom: recurring celebrations are held at Turchin Bridge in Nedelino. The specific program may vary. The festival and St. George’s Day are therefore separate occasions to visit; check their dates according to your travel plans.

Bridges, History and the Route to St. Nedelya

Nedelino has twelve medieval bridges. Along with its long history of settlement, they give the town another cultural and historical focus. Archaeological research documents human presence in present-day Nedelino and its surroundings from the Neolithic period to the present day. This spans a period from early traces to the settlement today.

For an outdoor activity, the Nedelino–St. Nedelya tourist route is another option. It was developed as an integrated tourism product. This does not indicate its current condition, so ask locally whether the route is in suitable condition for your visit. This allows you to make your decision about hiking separately from planning a festival visit or a culturally focused stay.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The municipality of Nedelino is accessible by car and bus. Check current bus timetables before you leave. Secondary road II-86 crosses this part of the Rhodopes and is part of the regional connection between Plovdiv, Smolyan, Nedelino, Zlatograd and the Greek border near Xanthi. This describes the interregional road connection, not a specific route through the town.

A tourist information center opened in the municipality of Nedelino in 2005. If you would like to get information there, check its current services and opening hours in advance.

When to Visit and Finding Accommodation

If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a stay in Nedelino, first decide what you want to focus on. For the folklore festival, its usual September dates are an important guide; for the tourist route, you should first check its condition before your visit. St. George’s Day offers another cultural occasion, and its program may vary.
