Nature and Trails in the Wider Destination of Devin
The Chairete protected area includes six natural landslide lakes in the Trigrad area. The Nastanska Mogila rock formation covers 3 hectares and lies at an elevation of 1,200 metres; its distinctive rocky ridge ends in a trunk-like shape. Another natural feature is Struilski Dol Waterfall, on a river in the Devin area. It has a drop of 3 metres. The lakes, rock formation and waterfall each offer a distinct landscape feature.
The Struilitsa–Kaleto–Lakata eco-trail starts in the Struilitsa locality and follows the river meanders. It passes through the protected area “Porechieto na reka Devinska”, established by Order RD-618 dated 8 July 2002. Metal bridges over the river, steps and rest areas are part of the route. The main trail is about 4 kilometres long; a shorter side trail takes about 30 minutes to reach Samodivsko Praskalo Waterfall. These different reference points help you assess the main trail and the detour. As the condition of individual bridges may change, check the latest trail information before setting out.
The protected area in the Devinska River valley includes an approximately 3-kilometre fishing zone for Balkan trout. If you plan to fish there, check the rules currently in force in advance. Trigrad Gorge offers another landscape highlight: the protected, 7-kilometre gorge was carved through marble cliffs by the Trigradska River, north of Trigrad. The road to Trigrad runs through the gorge and is a typical single-lane mountain road with two-way traffic. As conditions can vary by season, factor the road conditions into your plans.
Caves and Natural Features
The Devil’s Throat Cave is 17 kilometres south of Devin. Inside it, the Trigradska River forms a 42-metre-high underground waterfall, considered the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Yagodina Cave offers a different highlight: its galleries extend for 8,501 metres, making it the longest cave in the Rhodope Mountains. The two caves therefore stand out for different natural features: the waterfall in one and the extensive gallery network in the other.
Cultural History in Devin
Devin’s historical museum collection preserves around 2,000 exhibits of local and national significance. The museum exhibition presents ethnographic materials in four themed halls covering archaeology, the Second Bulgarian Empire, ethnography and modern history. These themes span different eras. Another historic site in the wider destination is Kavursko Kale, also called Kaleto: the fortress existed from the 6th to the 13th century and is designated a cultural monument of local significance. The eco-trail also leads to Lakata, where a medieval settlement once stood. The museum exhibits and archaeological remains thus offer different ways to explore history.
Culinary traditions are also part of the Devin experience. Rhodope klin, patatnik, Smilyan beans and Balkan trout are associated with the Devin region.
