The Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari adds a precise archaeological landmark to Razgrad Province: it was built in the first quarter of the 3rd century BC and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985. Its date of construction and World Heritage status offer two distinct chronological reference points. From Sveshtari or Malki Porovets, the tomb can be reached via a well-maintained paved road that runs through the Sboryanowo Reserve.

Sboryanowo: Archaeological History and Landscape

The historical and archaeological reserve of Sboryanowo extends across the western part of the Ludogorsko Plateau along the valley of the Krapinets River, between Malki Porovets and Sveshtari in Isperih Municipality. The plateau and river valley give the reserve a landscape dimension alongside its archaeological themes.

A route description from 2011 mentions a marked hiking trail from the visitor centre to Demir Baba Teke, as well as a marked cross-country cycling route in the area. Before setting out on a hike or bike ride, check whether the trail markings are up to date. About seven kilometres from the tomb, a visitor centre in Isperih Municipality has a car park, souvenirs, and information and promotional materials.

Admission is charged to visit the tomb. Access is restricted from March to November; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Guided tours are available in English, Russian and German. Check these visitor details and the guided tour options again before your visit.

Museums and Architectural History in Razgrad

The Regional Historical Museum in Razgrad brings together four thematic exhibitions: an archaeological exhibition, an ethnographic exhibition, the museum collection of Stanka and Nikola Ikonomov, and the museum house of composer Dimitar Nenov. The archaeological exhibition includes movable cultural artefacts dating from the Late Palaeolithic to the end of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Its broad timeline offers a different perspective from the specific construction and renovation dates of individual buildings.

The Professor Iliya Petrov Gallery in Razgrad offers another perspective on art. It holds more than 3,500 works of fine art. Here, a large art collection sits alongside the museum’s archaeological exhibition, which spans a broad chronology.

Architectural history can also be traced through specific dates. Construction of the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque began in 1530 at the order of Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha. The Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker in Razgrad’s Varosha district was built in 1860 and renovated in 1903. The clock tower was built in the 18th century and remodelled into its present form in 1864. Taken together, these dates mark different building phases: the start of the mosque’s construction, the church’s construction and later renovation, and the remodelling of the clock tower.

A sculptural detail in Razgrad is Momina Cheshma: a cast-iron figure of a girl in ancient clothing, with a hydria on her shoulder, standing on a stone pedestal. The description of its material, clothing and vessel gives this work a distinctive character alongside the exhibitions and buildings.

Woodland and Routes through the Province

The Voden hunting estate covers 14,469 hectares in Razgrad Municipality. Centuries-old forests and clear reservoirs characterise the area, which offers opportunities for hunting and recreation. Voden’s landscape therefore differs markedly from Razgrad’s collections and historic buildings.

For road navigation, Route II-23 is a regional reference point: it crosses Razgrad Province from west to east and connects Kubrat, Zavet and Isperih with Ruse and the Danube Bridge. For your specific journey, also check current traffic and road conditions.
