Razgrad brings together ancient history, ethnographic collections and nearby places to visit. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the highlights: Abritus and the cultural sites in Varosh tell different stories, while Pchelina focuses on nature and trails. Archaeological sites farther afield round out the options if you wish to make room for them in your itinerary.

Abritus: ancient city history and fortifications

The Abritus Archaeological Reserve is 2 km from Razgrad, is of national cultural significance and is one of Bulgaria’s 100 National Tourist Sites. Abritus was established at the end of the 1st century AD on the remains of a Thracian settlement. The 4th-century fortifications covered 15 hectares, with four gates and 35 defensive towers. The walls were 1,400 metres long and 2.10 to 3 metres thick; including the battlements, they reached a height of up to 12 metres. These measurements give a concrete sense of the scale of the fortifications. If you are interested in architecture and archaeology, you can explore the early history of the settlement alongside its later defensive structures here.

Guides assist visitors at the reserve. As their availability should be confirmed before your trip, it is advisable to enquire before your visit.

Varosh and ethnographic insights

In Varosh, the Ethnographic Museum is dedicated to the Kapantsi ethnographic group. It showcases their everyday life and spiritual culture. The Church of St Nicholas the Wonderworker in Varosha offers a different perspective on the area’s history: it was built in 1860, rebuilt in 1903 and is considered a remarkable example of church architecture from the mid-19th century. The museum and church thus represent different ways of exploring regional culture—through living traditions on the one hand and the architectural history of a religious building on the other.

The Stanka and Nikola Ikonomovi House Museum documents the couple’s lives, their educational work and their household. Photographs, documents and a recreated domestic interior bring these subjects to life. Those wishing to explore everyday life and the history of education as well as archaeological sites will find an additional point of interest here.

Cultural heritage near Sveshtari

The Sborianovo Historical and Archaeological Reserve lies around 40 km from Razgrad, near Sveshtari. It includes Hellenistic burial mounds, a fortified urban centre, cult complexes, altars and settlements. The Thracian Tomb of Sveshtari lies around 45 km from Razgrad. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is distinguished by its Hellenistic architecture, sculpture and painted decoration. The two destinations have different highlights: Sborianovo encompasses a larger archaeological landscape with several types of structures, while the tomb stands out for its architectural and artistic design.

Pchelina: forest, water and trails

The Pchelina recreation area is 8 km from Razgrad. It includes extensive woodland, a reservoir, tourist huts and routes. If you prefer exploring the area by bike or on foot, you can also include the 6 km cycle path between Razgrad and Pchelina in your plans. It is used by cyclists, pedestrians and people with reduced mobility. Infrastructure conditions can change, so check them before your trip.

Pchelina also has 14 marked tourist routes, with a total length of 46 km. As route markings can change, it is advisable to check their current status before setting out. The cycle path and network of routes offer different ways to experience the recreation area; the best option depends on whether you are looking for a connection between Razgrad and Pchelina or trails within the area.

Finding accommodation and choosing a focus

When looking for a hotel in Razgrad, it helps to decide on the focus of your trip first: will it mainly include Abritus and the cultural sites in Varosh, or would you also like to plan a visit to the more distant destinations near Sveshtari? The distances listed show the difference between Abritus at 2 km, Pchelina at 8 km and the archaeological sites around 40 and 45 km away.

The attractions also differ in what they offer: Abritus showcases ancient fortification architecture, the museums offer insights into ethnographic and domestic history, and Pchelina features forest, water and trails. This range makes it possible to plan a trip with a clear cultural focus, as well as one that allows extra time for the recreation area.
