Kyustendil Province is home to high-altitude lakes, a mountain basin and places with a long cultural history. The Seven Rila Lakes are located in the highest part of the territory of Sapareva Banya Municipality. Sapareva Banya itself lies at an elevation of 983 metres in a picturesque basin between the Rila and Verila mountains.
Rila scenery and viewpoints
At the Stob Pyramids, you can approach the site from the top down along a constructed eco-trail or from the bottom up along a maintained cart track. From the summit, the view extends across the entire Rila Valley, towards the entrance to Rila Monastery and to snow-covered mountain peaks. The Polska Skakavitsa Waterfall is another natural site in the province: it is 51 metres high and was designated a natural monument in 1968.
The international E-79 road, part of International Transport Corridor No. 4, runs near Sapareva Banya. It offers a general geographic reference point, although the road does not pass through the town itself.
Monastery, museums and history
Rila Monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983. Its grounds house several museum exhibitions. They cover the monastery’s millennia-old history, its religious and literary activities, and its economic organization in the 18th and 19th centuries. In Kyustendil, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is a cultural monument of national significance. Built in 1816, it is still an active place of worship. The St. George Museum Complex includes one of the oldest surviving churches in southwestern Bulgaria, dating from the 11th to 12th centuries. The ancient Asklepion bath complex dates from the early 2nd century, covers more than 3,000 square metres and includes nine excavated rooms.
A permanent exhibition at the Dimitar Peshev House Museum is dedicated to the events of March 1943 and the role played by Dimitar Peshev and his fellow citizens in saving Bulgarian Jews during the Second World War. Kyustendil’s archaeological, religious and more recent historical themes thus complement one another without being reduced to a single period.
Traditions and trails in Kyustendil
Traditional Kukeri festivals are a visitor attraction in Sapareva Banya Municipality. In Kyustendil, the National Mask Festival “Jamala” takes place every year in February. If you want to plan your visit around it, check the specific event dates. The “Kyustendil Spring” festival is considered a cultural heritage tradition that reinterprets an old local custom; its dates vary from year to year.
Two routes in Kyustendil offer different time frames. The walking route from central Kyustendil to Hisarlaka Landscape Park is two kilometres long and takes about 40 minutes at a normal walking pace; there are pavilions and benches along the way. The easy cultural and historical city walk in the town centre is approximately two kilometres long and takes about two to three hours. It is suitable for individual travellers, families, school groups and organized excursions. Although the distances are similar, the stated walking times differ considerably. Active experiences and wellness
Kyustendil’s municipal adventure park has four rope courses of varying difficulty set among the trees, as well as an alpine zip line. Pautalia Karting Track is located just outside Kyustendil, to the southwest of the city. It has lighting and four track configurations; the longest is 1,050 metres. Confirm current operating details before visiting. The Kentaur equestrian centre near Kyustendil offers horse riding and rides in nature; it operates seasonally.
Chifte Bath is supplied with hot mineral water, is intended for balneotherapy and offers therapeutic treatments, kinesiotherapy and massages. As services may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before visiting. At the Children of the Sun craft centre, “Pchelarnitsa” runs educational activities, demonstrations and tastings of bee products. Activity dates may also change.
