Vinitsa is shaped above all by the Maritsa River and its distinctive natural features. At its heart is Popovata Ada, one of the river’s largest islands and a protected natural area. The Enchanted Forest, an outdoor educational experience for children, is also near Vinitsa. When looking for a holiday rental in Vinitsa, you can distinguish between nature-focused interests and a specific focus on activities from the outset.

Popovata Ada and the floodplain landscape

Popovata Ada was formed entirely from deposits carried by the Maritsa and is one of the river’s largest islands. Deposits are material transported and laid down by a river; in Popovata Ada’s case, its formation links the island directly to the Maritsa. The protected area covers 178.867 decares in Vinitsa and preserves riparian forests and island ecosystems along the river. Around 180 species of higher plants have been recorded on the island. River sediments formed the island, while the protected area encompasses the riverbank and island ecosystems. The area figure shows its spatial extent, while the number of species adds to the picture of its botanical diversity.

The riparian forests near Vinitsa also provide habitats and breeding grounds for rare and protected animal species. The lowland floodplain forests around Vinitsa are among the last remaining forests of their kind in Bulgaria. The endangered summer snowflake also grows in the Vinitsa–Gradina forest area. The “Summer Snowflake Habitat” protected area is located in Vinitsa; areas in Vinitsa are also part of the BG0000578 “Maritsa River” Natura 2000 protected zone.

For a nature-focused visit, the distinction is clear: Popovata Ada is about the river island, how it formed and its plant life; the forests are primarily about animal habitats and the endangered summer snowflake.

Cultural points of interest

Cultural connections are also part of Vinitsa’s character. The active community centre “Georgi S. Rakovski 1928” is located in the village. The tomb chapel of Hadji Badar, also known as Baderlu, is also in Vinitsa and houses an icon of Saint Peter. For travellers who want to take in culture as well as nature, these are two distinct points of interest: an active community centre and a tomb chapel with a named icon.

Activities for children

The Enchanted Forest near Vinitsa offers a different kind of experience. This educational programme takes place outdoors and gives children the opportunity to take part in learning games as well as culinary and creative activities. Unlike the natural areas, the focus here is on the activities on offer. Programme details may change, so check the current offering before visiting.

Take the Vinitsa exit from the Trakia motorway to get there. Free parking for up to 40 cars is available at the entrance. Check the latest access and parking information before setting out.
