Borovo between Mountain Slope and Rocks
Borovo lies on the southern slope of the Gradishte Ridge, 1,030 metres above sea level. Striking rock formations rise above the village and shape its landscape. Krastova Gora is six kilometres from Borovo and is visited year-round by pilgrims and worshippers from Bulgaria and abroad. This gives travellers two distinct points of interest to consider: Borovo’s elevation and rocks, and the religious reason for visiting Krastova Gora.
Local History and Way of Life
Borovo’s first documented mention dates to 1083 and appears in the Typikon of the Bachkovo Monastery community. A further mention appears in an Ottoman tax register from 1576. The history of the modern settlement begins in 1903: after the Ilinden–Preobrazhenie Uprising, families from Momchilovtsi settled in Borovo. These dates mark different historical stages: early mentions are followed by the start of modern settlement.
According to local tradition, the name Borovo is associated with pine forests that once covered the settlement site and the surrounding land. This interpretation points to an earlier landscape. Traditional livelihoods included agriculture, livestock raising and work in the surrounding forest. The place name and occupations thus tell different stories about the relationship between settlement and land: one as an inherited interpretation of the name, the other as a historical everyday practice.
Culture and Trails
The churches in Borovo and Manastir were built through voluntary labour and local funding. Authentic folklore groups associated with the community centres in Borovo and Dryanovo resumed their activities in 2008 and attracted attention throughout Bulgaria. The municipality’s tourism framework for 2024–2027 also includes church celebrations in Borovo. If a celebration is important to your travel dates, check locally whether and when it is taking place.
Municipal projects have established eco-trails in the Borovo area. If you are considering a hike, check the route and its current condition before setting out. The trails offer a distinct nature-focused option alongside themes devoted to local history and culture.
