In Laki, river landscapes, waterfalls, hiking trails and cultural attractions can be found in the northeastern part of the western Rhodope Mountains. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between trails by their routes and features: some start right in Laki, while others begin in nearby places.

Rivers, Protected Area and Wildlife

The Municipality of Laki lies in a deeply dissected mountain region crossed by the Manastirska, Belishka, Dryanovska, Yugovska and Lakinska rivers. Part of the Red Wall Reserve lies within the municipality; UNESCO has recognized it as a biosphere reserve. Four natural landmarks are also recorded in the area. The 52-meter-high Slivodolsko Padalo waterfall is a registered natural landmark in the Red Wall Reserve.

The wider region is also home to diverse wildlife, including brown bears, chamois, mouflon, wolves, red deer, protected birds, otters and reptiles. Protected and rare plants, relict species and endemic species grow along the Komin Dere eco-trail. Nature attractions therefore range from a striking waterfall to the flora and fauna of the wider area.

Compare Hiking Trails by Route

The Komin Dere eco-trail starts in Laki and runs for about four kilometers to the hamlet of Braykovitsa. Three pavilions, a panoramic viewpoint and four information boards add to the route. As trail conditions and facilities can change, it is a good idea to check the latest situation before setting out.

The scenic eco-trail around the Holy Spirit Waterfall on the Manastirska is also about four kilometers long. Its facilities include stairs, handrails, a footbridge and rest areas. The two trails are therefore similar in approximate length but differ in route: Komin Dere connects Laki with Braykovitsa, while the other trail follows the waterfall. Trail conditions can change here too, so check them before your visit.

The Belitsa–Cave eco-trail starts at the first houses in Belitsa, on the approach from Laki. It follows the Belishka River and the slopes of the Krushevska ridge, ending at a natural cave. Inside are drawings of animals and people that resemble prehistoric paintings. A regional hiking guide dated August 11, 2024, describes the trail as suitable for families; trail conditions may change.

Another waterfall lies on the Belishka: Giumburtia is about two kilometers beyond Belitsa and near the Kormisosh residence. For outings, the Kormisosh State Game Farm also offers guided programs such as fishing, horseback riding, ecotourism, wildlife photography and excursions to historic sites and natural attractions. Programs and availability may change; check what is currently offered in advance.

Culture, Crafts and Regional Cuisine

The Nature and Heritage House in Laki is about ten minutes from the town center. It displays an ethnographic collection and regional crystal formations. A touchscreen information kiosk provides information about destinations and cultural activities in the region. Public visiting arrangements and the availability of the technical equipment may change; check both before your visit.

The Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1842, stands in Yugovo. It preserves 19th-century wall paintings and an iconostasis with icons dating from 1846 to 1851. The Holy Trinity Monastery complex at Krastova Gora is a pilgrimage center with healing water from the Ayazmoto. Preserved regional crafts include woodcarving, woodworking, weaving on a horizontal loom, knitting, sewing and embroidery.

Traditional Rhodope cuisine is associated with potatoes, dairy products and other animal products. The region also has beekeeping, fish farming and raspberry cultivation; however, traditional farming and livestock activities are not widely practiced. Laki is near the resort of Pamporovo and Bachkovo Monastery.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

Roads are the only means of transport in the municipality. The 2024–2027 municipal tourism program identifies poorly maintained fourth-class roads as an obstacle to reaching tourist attractions and some settlements. So check the specific route conditions before an outing. A tourist information center in Laki provides detailed information about attractions, accommodation and municipal event dates.

If you are looking for a hotel in Laki, your planned excursions can help you decide where to stay: Komin Dere starts in Laki, while the Belitsa–Cave eco-trail starts in Belitsa. Take these different starting points into account when planning, and check road conditions to each destination.
