Two kilometers southwest of Kuklen lies the Monastery of Saints Cosmas and Damian. It has been documented since the 11th century and preserves icons from the 18th century. A spring by the monastery is considered to have healing properties. The site thus offers several points of interest for visitors interested in religious heritage and its history.
Churches, Springs and History
The Church of the Holy Mother of God in Yavrovo is also associated with a spring: it lies next to the church and is considered sacred locally. The church contains a sealed underground chapel or catacomb. Associated with it are an icon from 1735 and a plaque from 1818; a statue is now in the Archaeological Museum in Sofia.
Yavrovo is first recorded in 1083 under the name Avrovo in a document from Bachkovo Monastery. Another tradition is Vdigane na Kunite: after Spasovden, icons are carried in a procession from the village church to the Chapel of St. Nicholas. The custom is associated with fertility. As an annual observance, its timing follows the religious calendar and is therefore not tied to a fixed date.
Yavrovo’s cultural life also includes creative workshops that bring together professional and amateur artists, young creatives, and several art forms. Dates should be checked separately. The writers and artists Nikolay Haytov and Boris Dimovski, both born there, are also associated with the village.
Village Traditions and Festivals
Yavrovo celebrates its village festival on September 8. The program includes a market, live music, Horo dancing, a liturgy, and a charity auction to support church restoration. Check the current program before your visit.
The Kuklen Cherry Festival centers on cherry dishes, including homemade cakes, fruit and cherry pies, and preserves. Presentations by the area’s three ethnic communities are also part of the event. The festival also features a dance celebration with local dances and customs, a dance competition, and prizes made by local craftspeople. As dates and event status should be checked, it is worth consulting the latest plans before your trip.
Kuklen’s Trifon Zarezan festival includes a traditional competition for the best homemade wine. The initiative is considered a city landmark; event details may vary.
Trails, Lake and Winter Sports
Rodopi Forest Park offers dozens of tourist trails leading to scenic spots and natural features. Together, they extend for more than 150 kilometers. The trail network offers a range of options for planning shorter outings and longer hikes as separate activities.
Around Zdravets Hut, visitors can go for walks, have picnics, and follow marked routes for longer hikes. There is a ski slope with a drag lift and equipment rental nearby. Check trail conditions and the operation of winter facilities before your trip.
There are also several options for winter sports: the ski slope at Byala Cherkva is considered internationally compliant in terms of length and vertical drop, and regional competitions are held there. At Zdravets Hut, a drag lift and equipment rental are noted. The information therefore describes different aspects of the two slopes that may be relevant for planning.
Lake Ruen lies two kilometers from Ruen, among pine-covered hills. There is a restaurant complex by the lake, and the area offers opportunities for sport and recreational fishing. As facilities and fishing conditions may change, check them before your visit.
