Fortress Wall and Early History

The fortress wall of Diocletianopolis brings the scale of the site into focus: it is 2,327 metres long, encloses 30 hectares and reaches a height of up to 11 metres in places. The southern Kamili Gate is 13 metres high. Its length, the area it encloses and the height of an individual gate offer different ways to appreciate the fortifications.

Early Christian history is also present in the town and its surroundings. Ten basilicas have been excavated and studied in and around Hisarya; three have been uncovered and are open to visitors. As access arrangements may change, it is advisable to check visiting options in advance.

The Archaeological Museum of Hisarya has an ethnographic exhibition showcasing local life and customs from the Bulgarian National Revival to the late 20th century. Kukeri masks and costumes are also among the exhibits. The Hisar Heritage augmented reality application offers another perspective on Diocletianopolis: themed magnets from the museum and associated sites are used to present animated scenes such as battles, market days and festivals.

Thracian Sites near Starosel

In nearby Starosel, which is also within Hisarya Municipality, the Thracian complex comprises six underground temples and several royal tombs. Four of the temples are considered unique; two are open to visitors. At the Starosel Horizon Tomb, there are signposts and parking, and a footpath leads from there to the temple. Hisarya and Starosel are also part of Bulgaria’s Valley of the Roses wine and culinary destination.

Compare Forest Trails and Routes

Hisarya Municipality lies in the Upper Thracian Plain, on the southern slopes of Sredna Gora. The area around Hisarya has mixed deciduous and coniferous forests, and hiking trails lead towards the Sredna Gora ridge and the mountain ranges to the south. Two described trails differ in length and destination: the 2.5-kilometre Momina Banya Eco Trail starts in the district of the same name. Its stops include a Christian cross, a rest area and a viewpoint with a shelter, benches and a fountain.

The Kliment Ohridski Eco Trail is one kilometre long and leads from Verigovo to St George’s Chapel and a Christian cross. The route also passes a picnic shelter and an open-air classroom overlooking the town. The two trails therefore differ in their distances and points of interest. As trail facilities may change, check them locally before setting out.

Cyclists can also choose between routes with different profiles. The seven-kilometre route from Hisarya to Voden Kamak Hut is designated for beginners, follows asphalt roads and ranges from approximately 360 to 450 metres in elevation. It passes through forest with acacias, lime trees and pines. By contrast, the 22-kilometre mountain route to Fenera Hut is intended for experienced cyclists. It climbs from approximately 360 to 1,400 metres and follows a hiking trail marked to the standards of the Bulgarian Tourist Union through mixed forest and ridge meadows.

Another option is the 20-kilometre semi-mountain route connecting Hisarya with Matenitsa and Starosel. It passes mixed forests, reservoirs and villa areas, and ends at the Thracian Temple of Starosel. Distance, designated skill level and destination provide concrete points of comparison. Markings and conditions may change; check the route’s condition before setting out.

Mineral Water and Your Stay

Hisarya combines mineral water with cultural and historical heritage and a well-preserved environment, and is known as a spa destination. The municipality uses its mineral water for health and spa tourism. Facilities include sanatoriums, rehabilitation centres, spa hotels and physiotherapy centres. If you are choosing a particular facility, check its current offerings.

The sites and trails offer different ways to shape your stay: explore the fortress wall and basilicas, visit the ethnographic exhibition, or compare the hiking and cycling routes described here. Starosel adds a perspective on the Thracian temples within the same municipality. This lets you experience culture, landscape and mineral water as different facets of Hisarya, without limiting your visit to just one type of activity.
