A rose-harvesting ritual, bagpipe music and Kukeri dances give the Rose Festival in Karlovo a distinctive cultural opening. The town is also home to historic houses, museums and churches that showcase different chapters of Bulgarian history. Other places in Karlovo Municipality have their own character: Kalofer focuses on museums and handicrafts, while Banya is known for its mineral waters.
Rose Festival and rose-growing traditions
The Rose Festival in Karlovo begins with a rose-harvesting ritual featuring folk groups. The opening includes traditional costumes, ceremonial breads and roses, as well as bagpipe music and Kukeri dances. A demonstration of rose distillation and the serving of rose products to guests are also part of the festival. The programme may vary from year to year. If you are especially interested in traditions and how they are performed, the festival offers more than a single custom: music, clothing, dance and rose products all come together.
Historic houses, museums and churches in Karlovo
The “Starinno Karlovo” ethnographic complex comprises five restored and adapted historic buildings. Each house offers activities and demonstrations in which visitors can take part. The visit thus combines historic buildings with hands-on, shared experiences. You can explore the demonstrations that interest you, one house at a time.
The Vasil Levski National Museum is in the centre of Karlovo. The complex includes the revolutionary’s birthplace, the “Vsyah Svetih Bolgarskih” memorial chapel—All Saints of Bulgaria—the Chardaklieva House, a museum exhibition and the monument to Gina Kuncheva, Levski’s mother. Guided tours are available in Bulgarian and English. The different elements make the visit appealing to travellers interested not only in the birthplace but also in the wider remembrance of Levski and his family.
Another historical detail awaits you at the “Sveta Bogoroditsa” Church: built in 1851, it has a wall painting depicting the ordination of Deacon Ignatius as a hierodeacon. The Church of St Nicholas is a listed monument of Bulgarian Revival architecture. Together, the two churches offer different ways to explore Karlovo’s history and architecture.
For a change of scenery from historical sites, Suchurum Waterfall lies 1 kilometre north of the centre of Karlovo. It is 15 metres high, and a walk along Vodopad Street leads there. This adds a specific natural attraction to a visit to the town’s sights.
Kalofer: museums, handicrafts and the Balkan landscape
Kalofer has its own distinct attractions within Karlovo Municipality. The Hristo Botev National Museum comprises a memorial house museum, an exhibition hall and two monuments: one to Hristo Botev and one to Ivanka Boteva, the poet’s mother. In Kalofer, visitors can also explore workshops where the famous Kalofer lace is made and traditional rural and woollen carpets are woven. Please confirm on site whether the workshops are open to visitors.
The Daskal Botev Schoolhouse is another place to consider when planning a visit: it is looked after by staff from the National Museum and follows its opening hours. Patriotic lessons are offered in the room of the mutual school, subject to prior request. So if you would like to include this activity, making a request is part of the preparation.
About 7 kilometres north of Kalofer is the Monastery of the Holy Nativity of the Mother of God. It lies in a valley beside the Byala River, surrounded by the hills of the Balkan Mountains. About 200 metres beyond the monastery are the entrance to Central Balkan National Park and the Byala Reka complex; the Byala Reka eco-trail is nearby. It is worth checking local conditions in advance before visiting.
Mineral waters in Banya
Another destination within the municipality is Banya, a spa resort in the fertile Karlovo Basin. The mineral water there is hyperthermal and has a temperature of 42 °C. For your trip, this offers a clear contrast with the historical and craft attractions in Karlovo and Kalofer: Banya is known for its mineral waters, while the other places focus mainly on culture, museums and traditions.
