One specific cultural landmark in Kosovo is the Church of St. Nicholas. It is considered a cultural attraction in the municipality of Treklyano, was built in 1885, and is located in the hamlet of Selo at an elevation of approximately 800 metres. The year it was built, the hamlet, and its elevation give a visit to the church a clear historical and geographical context. If you plan to visit the interior, check access arrangements in advance.

Landscape and Local Context in Kosovo

A historical description of the landscape portrays Kosovo as a rural river area associated with the Kosovska. The scene described includes meadows, plum orchards, and pastures, as well as wooded slopes with oak and beech trees. This adds a landscape context to the view of the church: open areas, orchards, and wooded slopes lie alongside one another. The description is historical; the landscape today may differ.

The Broader Destination of Treklyano

The municipality of Treklyano lies in the Osogovo-Belasitsa mountain range. This broader destination includes several distinct protected areas. The Natura 2000 site BG0000295 Dolni Koriten covers 137.4 hectares within the municipality. This area figure is given in the 2013 municipal plan; the protected status is also listed by the Ministry of Environment and Water. The Natura 2000 site BG0001017 Kŭrvav Kamŭk lies partly within the municipality of Treklyano.

Other natural landmarks in Treklyano include Koryata, a protected natural monument consisting of an ancient oak forest in the area of Dobri Dol. It was designated by Order No. 689 of 22 July 1987. The protected area “Habitat of Marsh Clubmoss” is also located in the area of Dragoychintsi and was designated by Order No. RD-143 of 18 February 2014. These details show different forms of protection across the broader destination: a natural monument and two Natura 2000 sites, alongside a separately named protected area.

Culture and History in Treklyano

Cultural landmarks across the broader destination of Treklyano are also associated with different locations. In the hamlet of Todorovtsi stands the centuries-old Krastato Darvo, an oak tree where pagan and religious rituals were performed. Treklyano is home to an art gallery belonging to the artist Evtim Tomov, a graphic artist and professor at the National Academy of Art. If you plan to visit the gallery, check access in advance.

The village church of Svеti Nikola in Dobri Dol was also built in 1885. Thus, the church in Kosovo and the church in Dobri Dol date from the same year, but are in different locations and have different local contexts. Historical sites across the broader Treklyano area also include the remains of the medieval Dragoychintsi Fortress. They are located in the Kulata area, 650 metres northwest of the village of Dragoychintsi. The fortress was triangular in shape: its eastern wall was about 180 metres long, while each of the other two sides was approximately 250 metres. If you would like to visit the remains, check access beforehand.

Festivals, Location, and Planning

Every summer, homecoming gatherings and folk festivals associated with Christian holidays are held across the broader destination of Treklyano. The largest festival takes place in Slavcheto, on the Bulgarian-Serbian border, and features music and folk performances. Dates and programmes may vary; check the specific details before planning your trip around them.

For orientation, Bulgaria’s tourist-region classification places the municipality of Treklyano in the Sofia tourism region and the Kraishte subregion. At the same time, it lies away from major transport links and larger administrative centres in Bulgaria. The municipality is also included in the EuroVelo “Iron Curtain Trail” route. This inclusion is recorded in the 2013 plan; check current signage and route details before setting out.
