Treklyano’s natural and cultural history has several tangible points of reference: designated protected areas, centuries-old oaks and historical traces in individual villages. The municipality is located in the Osogovo-Belasitsa mountain range. Under Bulgaria’s tourist area classification, it belongs to the Sofia tourism region and the Kraishte subregion. At the same time, Treklyano lies far from major transport links and Bulgaria’s larger administrative centres.
Protected Areas and Ancient Oaks
The Natura 2000 site BG0000295 Dolni Koriten lies within the municipality of Treklyano and covers 137.4 hectares there. The area figure comes from the municipal plan of 2013; the Ministry of Environment and Water also lists its protected status. The second Natura 2000 site, BG0001017 Kŭrvav Kamŭk, lies partly within the municipality. The two names therefore refer to protected areas, each with its own location details.
Koryata is a protected natural monument consisting of an ancient oak forest in the area of Dobri Dol. It was designated by Order No. 689 of 22 July 1987. The protected area “Marsh Clubmoss Habitat” is also located in the area of Dragoychintsi. It was designated by Order No. RD-143 of 18 February 2014. The oak forest and the two Natura 2000 sites highlight different features: one is a natural monument, while the others are designated protected areas.
Ritual Tree, Gallery and Historical Traces
A centuries-old oak in the hamlet of Todorovtsi is called Krastato Darvo. Pagan and religious rituals were performed at this tree. The ritual history is thus tied to a single named place, adding a cultural point of reference to the broader landscape and protected-area themes.
Treklyano is also home to an art gallery by the artist Evtim Tomov. Tomov is a graphic artist and professor at the National Academy of Art. The village church of St. Nicholas, Sveti Nikola, stands in Dobri Dol and was built in 1885. The construction year provides a specific historical marker for this place; it does not imply any information about current access to the church interior.
The remains of the medieval Dragoychintsi Fortress lie in the Kulata area, about 650 metres northwest of the village of Dragoychintsi. The fortress was triangular in shape: its eastern wall was about 180 metres long, while the other two sides were each about 250 metres long. If you plan to visit the site, check access in advance.
Summer Festivals and Cycling Route
In summer, annual homecoming gatherings and folk festivals are held in connection with Christian holidays. The largest takes place in Slavcheto, on the Bulgarian-Serbian border, and features music and folklore programmes. Dates and programme details vary. So if you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific dates.
There is also a regional context for cyclists: a 2013 development plan includes the municipality on the EuroVelo “Iron Curtain Trail” route. Before setting off, check the current route and signage. Along with its location far from major transport links and larger administrative centres, this information helps put Treklyano in context as a destination without assuming any particular journey or fixed itinerary.
