Topolovgrad is in the Haskovo region of central Bulgaria. Within the municipality, the terrain is hilly in the south and flat in the north. For trip planning, cultural history and hiking trails through the Sakar landscape go hand in hand: you can shape your stay around museums and events or time outdoors.
Cultural Sites and History
The municipality’s recreation and tourism areas include Paleokastro, the route towards Visegrad Peak, Kazankite, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, areas around Sakarci and Hlyabovo, and the Lower Tundzha Gorge near Darkaya. Several rock churches are also among the named sites: the Old Church above the monastery, the Chapel of Saint Marina in Sakarci, St. Spas north of Topolovgrad, and a rock church near Matochina.
The Topolovgrad Historical Museum presents the area’s history from antiquity to the present day. An ethnographic collection is on the lower floor. Another museum collection is housed in the community cultural centre in Radovets. The town’s history is also tied to crafts and trade: Topolovgrad developed into an important centre for crafts and trade, and its residents were known as winegrowers.
Paleokastro combines a sanctuary with a fortress. The climb there from southwest of Topolovgrad is around 2.5 kilometres; the site is at an elevation of approximately 424 metres. Allow about an hour and a half each way. The route is mostly along a forest path and has a moderate elevation gain. Sturdy footwear and water are recommended. Access to Paleokastro is free; there are no fixed opening hours or admission fees. As access arrangements may change, check locally before travelling.
Hiking and Landscape
The Visegrad Eco Trail is a loop: the start and finish are at a car park on the road towards Visegrad. The trail climbs to the highest point in Sakar and leads to fortress ruins. The Visegrad route is mostly on forest paths; there are no water fountains along the way. It is intended for physically active hikers. Sturdy footwear, food, water and basic hiking gear are recommended.
The Hlyabovo–Nachevi Chaïri loop offers a different hiking setting. It runs through the forest, crosses the Sokolitsa River and passes a small reservoir on the return. The routes therefore differ in their landscape features: Visegrad focuses on the climb to the Sakar summit and fortress ruins, while Hlyabovo features the river and reservoir. Near Topolovgrad, the Plochet recreation centre combines trails and sports courts for volleyball, basketball and football with seating, shelters, a playground, barbecue facilities and a model of a Thracian sanctuary.
The protection of distinctive rock formations also shapes the landscape: Black Rocks has been designated a protected natural landmark within the municipality since March 2022. The Sakar region is open, low-lying mountain country with rounded hills and small river valleys. 220 bird species have been recorded in Sakar; 90 of them are listed in Bulgaria’s Red Data Book. The region also offers a glimpse of winemaking: around a dozen wineries produce wine there, although the number may change. Red varieties are the focus, with Merlot considered the leading local grape.
Festivals and Planning Your Stay
Topolovgrad hosts the annual International Velko Kanev Festival of Amateur Comedy, Pantomime and Satire, which is part of Bulgaria’s National Cultural Calendar. At the traditional folk festival near the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, folklore groups from Southeastern Thrace perform; along an artists’ avenue, painters display their work and paint on site. Every October, the Golden Eagle Festival in Topolovgrad brings together wines from Sakar, farmers’ produce, natural products, wine tastings, barbecues and demonstrations of traditional food preparation. Event dates and programmes vary; check the dates against your travel period.
When looking for a holiday rental, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: museums and cultural events, or hikes with different trail features and levels of difficulty. This makes it easier to match your accommodation choice to your planned travel days, without trying to fit cultural sites and longer hikes into the same day.
