The Old Bridge leads straight into Svilengrad’s history: it connects the two parts of the town and is considered a remarkable architectural monument of southeastern Europe. In Svilengrad, you can combine a visit to the bridge with a walk along the Maritsa. A pedestrian promenade follows the riverbank and leads to the structure—a clear route from the riverbank to one of the area’s defining historic sites.

The bridge and cultural sites by the river

The Old Bridge is also the only fully preserved element of a former complex comprising a caravanserai, mosque, bazaar, and hammam. This connection gives the structure a special historical dimension: it represents not only bridge architecture but also a former ensemble of various public and religious buildings.

The Old Turkish Bath is also part of the town’s cultural history. The building has been converted into an art gallery, where changing exhibitions by emerging and established Bulgarian artists are held. The town library is also located beside the Maritsa and the Old Bridge. Its facilities include five reading rooms and separate sections for adults and children.

Silk, wine, and cultural encounters

Sericulture and silk production have had a major influence on Svilengrad’s economic history and cultural development. Visitors interested in local history will find a topic here that extends beyond individual buildings: it connects economic life with the development of the community. Viticulture and winemaking are also part of the region’s character. A complete cycle of viticulture and wine production is described for the municipality.

With its border location, Svilengrad is considered a meeting place for Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. This cultural orientation is also reflected in the international folklore festival, where participants from the three countries come together for cultural exchange. The festival offers another way to experience the region—through music and folklore rather than architectural history or landscape.

The Maritsa and the Sakar Mountains

The Maritsa is the municipality’s most important water resource and its main receiving watercourse; its tributaries rise in the Sakar Mountains. The river also flows through Svilengrad’s regulated urban area. This brings the river landscape and urban space into direct contact in the region. Visitors interested in both nature and culture can explore these themes alongside the historic sites as further perspectives on the municipality.

Among the archaeological remains is the Thracian dolmen near Levka, dating to the beginning of the first millennium BC. It is relatively easy to reach via an unpaved road. Weather or roadworks may affect access, so check conditions before your visit. At the rock-hewn Church of St. Panteleimon, 14 steps carved into the rock lead upward. The church is three kilometres southeast of Mihalich.

Fortresses and rock churches

The Bukelon Fortress offers another historical perspective. It was part of Adrianople’s strategic defence system and rises on a plateau in the southeastern part of the Sakar Mountains. The rock-hewn Church of St. Spirit reaches further back in time: it was built in the tenth century by hermit monks and remains a place of pilgrimage. Together, these sites reveal different aspects of the past—from strategic defence to religious tradition.
