At Ivaylovgrad Reservoir, water-based recreation meets changing birdlife themes; Villa Armira tells the story of an ancient aristocratic residence. There are also trails in Lambuh, a Roman bridge and a monastery church. Ivaylovgrad therefore offers several focal points for a stay. When planning, it is worth weighing nature, culture and wine as different interests and choosing routes and access according to your own daily itinerary.
Lakeside scenery
Ivaylovgrad Reservoir lies in the narrow valley of the Arda. Expansive deciduous forests, heat-loving and drought-adapted vegetation, scattered rocks and cliffs define the surroundings. Fishing and water sports take place at the reservoir. If you are planning either activity, check the relevant rules and offerings in advance; regulations and providers may vary.
A total of 163 bird species have been recorded in the reservoir area. The surroundings are important for the breeding of the white-tailed eagle, osprey and lesser spotted eagle. In winter, the reservoir is considered an important wetland in the Eastern Rhodopes for wintering waterbirds, including the great egret and smew. The seasonal focus therefore differs: breeding birds and wintering waterbirds are distinct highlights, and the presence of individual species may vary by season.
In the municipality of Ivaylovgrad, the White River Meanders protected area covers about 1,532 hectares. Its protected landscape includes meanders, rare plants and animals, and natural forests of Oriental plane trees. Lambuh lies in the Eastern Rhodopes near the reservoir and is characterized by mountainous and mid-mountain landscapes.
Villa Armira and historic sites
Villa Armira lies in the Armira Valley and is considered a two-thousand-year-old aristocratic residence. White and colored marble mosaics, along with architectural fragments, bring its design to life. The villa is designated a cultural monument of more than national importance and is on Bulgaria’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage. It is accessible via a paved road; there is a designated parking lot and access for people with disabilities. A cycle path also runs from Ivaylovgrad to the villa. If road access or accessibility is important to your plans, check the current situation before your visit.
The Ivaylovgrad Historical Museum is housed in a former Roman bath and features local exhibitions. A Roman bridge stands in the wooded valley of the Aterenska River. Lambuh is also home to the St. Peter and St. Paul Monastery Church, dating from the early 19th century. These places offer different historical points of reference for a trip: from Roman structures and museum objects to a 19th-century monastery church.
Trails and viewpoints
Three trails in Lambuh lead to different destinations: a 775-meter path runs to Ayazmoto, a 300-meter route leads to Ivaylovgrad Reservoir, and a 4,030-meter panoramic trail leads to a tourist shelter. This lets you plan around a specific destination and the length of each trail. Trail infrastructure may change due to maintenance; check conditions before your outing.
Remains of walls, towers and other structures survive at Lyutitsa Fortress. A panoramic view opens up from the former fortress summit. You can reach the fortress on foot, by bicycle or in a 4x4 vehicle via an unpaved road, either from the Ladzhata district of Ivaylovgrad or from Plevun. Road conditions and trail markings may change; check in advance if you plan to use this route.
The Lambuh tourist area also has a children’s playground with a swing, slide and climbing frame. As the facility’s availability may change, check before visiting.
Wine and choosing accommodation
Ivaylovgrad is associated with wine tastings at Yamantiev Winery. Confirm dates and availability directly with the winery before planning a tasting. A confirmed wine tasting can be added as a separate activity.
