Numerous natural hot springs stretch for around 500 metres through Mineralni Bani along a fault zone in a volcanic massif. This thermal area defines the spa resort: the hyperthermal water is about 54 to 59°C and is used in a public mineral bath and in treatment facilities for water treatments and balneotherapy.
Thermal waters in the open air
The Chifte Bath attraction provides outdoor access to flowing mineral water. It also features two large metal showers and an evening laser light show. If you are coming specifically for this presentation, check the current schedule in advance, as details may change.
Mineral-water bathing options include indoor and outdoor pools. Among the outdoor pools are both a semi-Olympic pool and an Olympic-size pool. If you have a particular bath or pool in mind, it is best to check the current access conditions and opening status.
The spa resort lies at an altitude of about 280 metres on the northern slopes of the Eastern Rhodopes and is surrounded by woodland. This combines the water facilities with a landscape in which nature trails and protected areas also play a role.
Compare eco-trails by length and facilities
The four eco-trails differ in both length and the number of rest and activity areas. At 4.75 kilometres, the Sarnitsa–Kupena–Orlovi Skali trail is the shortest of the four. It includes three rest and activity areas, as well as tourist information and signposts. The Mineralni Bani–Aykaas route is 7.75 kilometres long and has seven such areas, including the Aida hut.
The Boyan Botevo–Ulu Dere–Orlovi Skali trail runs for 10 kilometres and also includes seven rest and activity areas, with sections near Pette Chuchura and Orlovi Skali. At 15.38 kilometres, Bryastovo–Uzun Dere–Orlovi Skali is the longest of the four routes; it is intended for nature tourism in the municipality. This makes it possible to compare route lengths first, while the listed stops and facilities provide further guidance.
Larger tourist destinations can be reached via paved roads. Other cultural and natural sights can be explored along six eco-trails, suitable for walking or for vehicles with high ground clearance. As trail infrastructure can change, it is advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
Traces of different eras
In the centre of Mineralni Bani is the “Footprint of the Virgin Mary”, just five metres from the oldest known mineral spring. The water-related place of worship was created by the Thracians and was also used in Roman, medieval and modern times. The rock formation is interpreted as an altar associated with water deities.
Above Sarnitsa, Kaleto preserves the walls of a Thracian, Late Antique and medieval fortress. Surviving features include a signal tower and an enclosed area of around two decares. The “City of the Sun” archaeological complex above Angel Voyvoda has the status of cultural heritage of national importance. At the Hasara complex, a fortress wall and more than 50 niches carved into the rock are particularly noteworthy.
The Sharapani near Mineralni Bani also tell of the area’s long winemaking tradition: these wine installations carved into the rock date from the first millennium BC. The “Horo at the Grape Harvest” festival combines a reconstructed Thracian ceremony with Bulgarian folklore and dance groups. It is organised as a three-day event in September and is linked to the vineyards around Susam.
The festival includes demonstrations of winemaking at the ancient Sharapani. Regional grape and wine producers present wines for tasting and sale; their participation may vary from year to year. This brings archaeological heritage, folklore and contemporary wine production together in a shared festival setting. Check the current event dates and programme before planning a specific trip.
Nature and further discoveries
Between Aida Peak and Sarnitsa are several protected natural features: Orlovi Skali, Boraka Reserve and a protected site for wild peonies and lily of the valley. The terrarium in Toplika Park offers a very different kind of discovery. Its permanent exhibition includes amphibians and reptiles, such as a green iguana, rock python, Paraguayan anaconda and rattlesnakes; the attraction is aimed at children and adults.
