Plachkovtsi is one of the access points to the mountain trails in Natural Park Bulgaria. Nature, landscapes and history give different areas of focus to a choice of destination: centuries-old beech trees, ancient solitary trees and rock formations sit alongside mountain trails and local cultural connections. When considering Plachkovtsi, you can first decide whether you want to focus more on nature or history.

Mountain Trails and Panoramic Views

These park access points provide access to hiking trails, cycling routes and eco-routes. Different ways of exploring are therefore part of Plachkovtsi’s nature theme. Vikanata Skala offers a specific landscape view: from there, the panorama extends to the Fore-Balkan and the Danubian Plain. These two named landscape regions give the view a clear direction; at the same time, the site can be considered a focal point in its own right, alongside the mountain trails.

Beech Forests and Natural Landmarks

The protected site of Mahchenitsa-Yovovtsi, with its centuries-old beech forests, lies in the Plachkovtsi area. It covers 63.8 hectares. Stolista is another protected site in the Plachkovtsi area; centuries-old beech trees are preserved there across 1.7 hectares. Comparing their sizes makes the difference between the two areas clear: Mahchenitsa-Yovovtsi covers considerably more ground than Stolista. Both names refer to stands of beech trees, but each is a separate site.

Individual natural features also have their own names. Golemiya Buk is a centuries-old beech tree in the Plachkovtsi area. Skalen Venets is in the Mahnatenite Skali area and is a protected natural landmark covering 7.4 hectares. Vikanata Skala is a protected rock formation in the Plachkovtsi area, covering 0.5 hectares. Together with the panoramic view, these features reveal a landscape focus that includes both old trees and distinctive rock formations. Check local access conditions in advance before visiting Skalen Venets.

History and Local Traditions

The Church of the Holy Prophet Elijah in Plachkovtsi was built in 1882. Its patron saint’s feast is celebrated on Ilinden. A local account of history places the Battle of Tryavna Pass in 1190 in the area around Plachkovtsi and reports that Ivan Asen I defeated the army of Isaac II Angelos there. Some stretches of the old Roman paving of Vereyski Drum are also still visible. These historical connections differ in their dates: the battle is associated with the year 1190, while the church has a specific year of construction and its patron saint’s feast is linked to a recurring local custom.

An account of the Epiphany celebration in January 2025 describes the traditional immersion and retrieval of the Holy Cross, accompanied by bagpipes, a drum and horo dancing. If you are planning to travel for a future celebration, check its date and schedule in advance; the information about the 2025 celebration does not establish future arrangements.

Nature or Culture as Your Focus

For planning your trip, the themes can be clearly distinguished: mountain trails, beech forests and natural landmarks shape the nature focus; the church, historical connections and local customs provide a cultural focus. The panoramic view from Vikanata Skala adds a specific vista to the nature themes. Choose according to what interests you most, and plan visits to protected sites with local conditions in mind.
