Prestoy is located in Bulgarka Nature Park and also lies within the Bulgarka Natura 2000 protected zone (BG0000399). Hiking trails, protected landscapes, and historic landmarks give the area its distinct character—from beech forests and bird habitats to a memorial site on the road to Bahretsi.
Natural surroundings and orientation
Bulgarka Nature Park was designated by an order dated August 9, 2002. Its purpose is to protect, restore, and preserve beech ecosystems and landscapes in the Gabrovo and Tryavna sections of the Central Balkan Mountains. The Natura 2000 zone has a separate conservation purpose: preserving and restoring the habitats of protected bird species. Thus, both forest and landscape management and the protection of bird habitats form part of Prestoy’s natural setting.
For mountain and hiking tourism, Tryavna Municipality provides a tourist map online. You can use it to find your bearings when planning. Bulgarka Nature Park also has marked mountain trails and includes parts of Tryavna and Gabrovo.
Hiking trails between forests and settlements
The Staroto gradishte Eco Trail runs through the areas between Koychevtsi, Prestoy, and Rashevi within Tryavna Municipality. It passes through beech and coniferous forests, agricultural land, and settlements; the slopes are moderately inclined. The trail reaches Golyama Kilimyavka, whose highest point is 750 meters above sea level. Check local conditions before hiking.
The hiking area around Prestoy also includes old houses and stone fountains associated with local rural life. Beech forests and meadows are part of the landscape along trails in the area between Tryavna, Koychevtsi, Rashevi, and Prestoy. These add further landscape features to the description of the Eco Trail, although not all trails follow the same route or course.
Historic landmarks
The name of the Golyama Kilimyavka peak refers to a medieval fortress associated with a battle at Tryavna Pass in 1190. Another historic memorial is located at Aladzhov Han, on the road between Prestoy and Bahretsi. It commemorates the passage of Russian troops during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878.
Tryavna also offers a cultural highlight: the Daskalova House features carved suns and houses the Museum of Woodcarving. This places nature and hiking trails alongside a specific craft tradition in the surrounding area. When planning, you can decide whether you are mainly interested in the hiking trails around Prestoy or would also like to include Tryavna’s woodcarving.
