Miranda lies on the banks of the Rio Miranda in a transition zone between the Pantanal and Serra da Bodoquena. Churches, a central square, the site of the former railway station, and regional cultural events offer a range of points of interest. Miranda also serves as a starting point for a wider river region with rural guesthouses, fazenda hotels, and sport-fishing facilities. When looking for accommodation, you can therefore decide whether to focus on the town itself or its regional surroundings.

Churches and Industrial History

The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Carmo was built in 1931 in the eclectic architectural style. In architecture, eclecticism refers to the use of elements from different styles. The church is considered one of Miranda’s most significant historic buildings. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo was restored between 2015 and 2017 and designated a protected monument. The construction date and the restoration period refer to different points in time: the church’s construction and its later restoration and protection. The church can thus be understood both through its architecture and its history as protected cultural heritage.

Another chapter in the town’s history is associated with Usina Assucareira Santo Antônio LTDA, also known in Miranda as Usina Velha. It was inaugurated on July 21, 1929, and designated protected cultural heritage in 2007. The Usina was therefore inaugurated two years before the church was built. The later dates also differ: the sugar mill’s protection dates to 2007, while the church’s restoration and protection took place between 2015 and 2017. This comparison presents two different landmarks: the sugar mill as part of industrial history and the church as a historic religious building.

Squares, Remembrance, and Cultural Events

Praça Central Agenor Carrilho is one of Miranda’s cultural heritage landmarks. This means that cultural points of interest extend beyond individual historic buildings to include the central square. Another historic reference point is the site of the former railway station. The first Estação Cultural was held there. For that event, the historic site was revitalized and made a place for the community to meet, remember, and enjoy themselves.

Events also offer insight into Miranda’s cultural identity. With its 21st edition in 2026, the Cavalgada Ecológica de Miranda is one of the city’s longest-running cultural events. It celebrates local culture and preserves Pantanal traditions; residents and visitors were invited to the planned activities. The 8th Festa Carapé in 2026 was held at Clube do Laço Coração Pantaneiro. It was a gathering of friends, families, and lovers of Pantanal culture, and celebrated traditions that are part of Miranda’s identity. The two events highlight different aspects: the Cavalgada focuses on local culture and Pantanal traditions, while the Festa Carapé brings people together around Pantanal culture.

Miranda and the River Region as an Accommodation Base

Miranda serves as a starting point for a range of rural guesthouses and fazenda hotels throughout the Salobra and Miranda river region. Several sport-fishing facilities are also located in this region. This regional focus extends beyond the town of Miranda itself. The town’s history and a stay in the surrounding region can therefore be considered as distinct travel-planning priorities.
