The Vrbas crosses the municipality of Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje for 35 kilometres. At the foot of Vranica, near the village of Ždrimci, there are three lakes known collectively as Ždrimačka jezera. For planning purposes, the natural features can be grouped into a river, a named group of lakes and waterfalls, whose characteristics range from height and geological formation to seasonal conditions.

Waterfalls, River and Seasonal Nature

Within the municipality, an asphalt road through Ždrimci leads towards the Ždrimački Waterfall. The road then continues as a two-kilometre gravel track, after which you can proceed on foot. Road surfaces can change, so check local conditions before setting out. This means that planning access also involves a section on foot.

The Crnodolski Waterfall, also known as the Ždrimački Waterfall, is 29 metres high. The Sikirski Waterfall lies on the stream of the same name within the municipality and was formed by fault movements. By contrast, heavy rainfall and snowmelt determine when Ljuti slap forms on the slopes of the Pode elevation in the Desna area. These offer three different points of comparison for nature sites: a specific height, a geological formation and a phenomenon linked to weather and snowmelt.

Getting There and Seasonal Activities

As a reference point in the road network, the M-16.2 trunk road between Banja Luka and Mostar crosses the municipality for about 18 kilometres. Road conditions can change seasonally; if you plan to use this route to get there, check the latest conditions in advance.

Near Gornji Vakuf, SRC Raduša offers ski equipment rental and ski instructors. These services can change from season to season. If you plan to use them on a winter trip, check what is currently available. The seasonal information differs: Ljuti slap forms during heavy rain or after snowmelt, while the ski services mentioned may change from season to season.

A 2021 report mentions hikers from Gornji Vakuf and an enthusiastic mountain biker on Vranica. For a specific hiking or cycling route, check local conditions.

Architecture and Urban History

The Gafića Tower (Sahat kula) is located in Gornja mahala, not far from Gafića duno and Gafića Mosque. Its construction is dated to around 1610; it has been under state protection since 1950. The approximate date and the year it came under protection refer to different historical points: the former indicates when it was built, while the latter marks the start of state protection.

As a historical conclusion, the construction of Džamija Mehmed-beg Stočanin is dated to 1592/1593. Gornji Vakuf developed from the area around Džemat Mehmed-beg Stočanin. This urban development and the dating of the mosque are separate historical points.

Festival Walking Tours

At the Festival of Ilahije and Kaside, choirs and soloists were offered sightseeing walks around Gornji Vakuf during breaks between rehearsals and lunch. If you are interested in the festival, check in advance whether walking tours are still part of the programme.
