Busovača offers a range of options for a stay: local history, religious buildings, a cycling route along a former railway line, and leisure activities within the municipality. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on culture, activity or scenery.

Local History and Religious Buildings

Busovača was first mentioned in written records on 16 August 1371. In the Middle Ages, the town was an important meeting place for merchants from Dubrovnik. Busovača also grew around an iron ore mine where many Saxon miners worked. These historical connections tell a story of trade and mining, as well as the town’s earliest written mention.

The Sulejman-begova Mosque was first built in the 16th century, completely destroyed during the war, and rebuilt in 2002. A Catholic church in Busovača was completed in 1885. The Church of Saint Elijah was completed in 1968 and is just a short walk from the town centre. The mosque’s construction and reconstruction history thus offers a distinct perspective on the town’s religious history alongside the completion dates of the churches.

The Tekija Mesudija is another distinctive architectural landmark: the building is arranged over three floors, with the tekija on the top floor. Visitors can also see stećci in the municipality; conditions at the site may vary. Those interested in religious buildings and cultural heritage will find several different subjects to explore, without needing to combine them into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

Landscape, Cycling and Winter Sports

The “Staza stare pruge” (Old Rail Trail) cycling route runs through the municipality of Busovača. It follows the route of a former narrow-gauge railway from the Austro-Hungarian period. The route is considered easy and passes mostly through gentle terrain with mild inclines. It offers a different kind of activity from the slopes at Pridolci Ski Centre: here, the focus is on cycling along a historic railway line.

The section between Travnik and Busovača has been renovated, and the route is maintained regularly. Check the current trail conditions before setting out. Tisovac, near the municipal centre, is considered a frequent starting point for tourist and leisure activities.

Busovača lies near the confluence of the Ivančica and Kozica rivers; the Kozica is a tributary of the Lašva. In Kaonik, a stretch of the Lašva River is among the visitor attractions. Mineral springs can be found in the town and surrounding area, including in Klokoti and Oselište. These varied landscape features range from river courses to springs in several nearby settlements.

Pridolci Ski Centre in the municipality has two ski lifts serving two slopes and caters to beginners and recreational skiers. Visitors can rent ski equipment at the resort and hire instructors from the ski school. Available services may vary by season, so check the latest information before planning your visit. This makes it easier to match the facilities to your interest in skiing, without treating the cycling route and ski slopes as equivalent activities.

Events and Cuisine

The Feast of Saint Anthony is held in Busovača every year on 13 June and attracts visitors from other towns. The exact programme may change. If you would like to plan your stay around the feast, check the event dates and programme details in advance.

The municipality has a decades-long tradition of good restaurants and high-quality cuisine, including roasts and other specialities. Food can therefore be one of the focuses of a trip to Busovača. Individual restaurants and their offerings may change.
