Milanovići offers a historical point of interest in the village and a range of destinations in the wider region. These include fishing competitions at Lake Zanesovići, winter sports in Rostovo, and natural features associated with local stories. When planning, it is worth distinguishing local cultural history from regional excursions, so it remains clear what is in Milanovići and what should be considered a separate destination.

Fishing at Lake Zanesovići

Lake Zanesovići is in the wider region around Milanovići, 10 kilometres from the town of Bugojno. It can be reached via a new paved road. Municipal and cantonal float fishing competitions, as well as the opening of the respective fishing seasons, are traditionally held there. This makes the lake particularly interesting for travellers interested in the region’s fishing tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around a competition or the opening of a season, check the dates in advance.

You can complement a visit to the lake with a look at the wider landscape around Bugojno: the town is surrounded by densely forested, conifer-rich mountains and meadows, and the Vrbas River is rich in fish. This is a different focus from the recurring fishing events at the lake: the landscape describes the wider area, while the competitions take place at a specific location.

Winter sports in the wider area

The Rostovo Ski Centre is about 10 kilometres from Bugojno. The ski area offers opportunities for beginners and recreational skiers. A floodlit ski slope also allows for night skiing. So, alongside fishing at the lake, winter sports are another option for a regional excursion. If you are planning a ski trip, check the current operating hours in advance.

Local history and stories

A wooden mosque was inaugurated in the Džemat Karadže in Milanovići on 1 November 2014. It is a religious institution serving the community. If you are planning a visit, check visiting arrangements in advance. The grave of Omer Tupa is also located in the Milanovići district. His name is associated with a historical reference beyond the village as well: the First Bugojno Company was named after him.

In the wider region, the rock formation Kameni svatovi is considered a natural rarity of Bugojno. A local legend tells how a wedding procession turned to stone. The formation is halfway between Gračanica and Kordići and about 2 kilometres from the Bugojno–Gornji Vakuf main road. The legend gives the place a folkloric association; it is a story about the rock formation, not an explanation of how it formed.

The municipality of Bugojno also provides a historical context: archaeological sites attest to settlement dating back to the Bronze Age and the Late Iron Age, as well as the existence of the fortified Roman municipium Ad Matricem. These finds are located within the municipality and should not be confused with a single historic building in Milanovići.

Understanding routes and transport

The Đelemski put passes through the settlements of Karađže, Milanovići, and Udurlije. If you include it in your plans, check the current condition of the route and the local signage. The approximately 100-kilometre Staza stare pruge route from Busovača to Jajce is another cycling option in the wider area. It is possible to continue from Donji Vakuf via Bugojno to Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje; do not assume that the entire route is continuously marked.

Milanovići is listed as a stop on the local SBK-74 route between Karadže and Kotezi. Check the current timetable before travelling. When looking for an apartment, it helps to choose your focus first: local history in Milanovići or excursions to destinations in the wider area.
