Maculje in Novi Travnik is UNESCO World Heritage component 1504-005 of the serial property “Stećci – Medieval Tombstone Graveyards”. For trip planning, it helps to consider the stećak necropolises, cultural sites in the town centre and the Rostovo landscape as distinct priorities.

Stećci, Historic Sites and Nature

The Maculje – Kameni svatovi necropolis contains 101 stećci in the form of chests, slabs and gabled tombstones, as well as 16 anthropomorphic cross-shaped tombstones. According to legend, the cross-shaped tombstones represent wedding guests turned to stone. Thus, alongside the tombstones themselves, their traditional interpretation and shapes are also a focus.

The Opara stećak necropolis offers another precisely quantified perspective: it contains 42 stećci, including 10 gabled tombstones, 29 chests and 3 slabs. Three cross-shaped tombstones are 1.80 m high and date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Opara is listed as a historic site in the municipality of Novi Travnik in the national register of monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Sebešić, 13 stećci, five anthropomorphic tombstones and a tumulus are spread across the site; the necropolis was declared a national monument on 11 September 2007.

The Bistro necropolis lies about 10 km from Novi Travnik in the direction of Gornji Vakuf (Uskoplje), contains 26 stećci and is located by the Grlonica River. The Old Mosque in the village of Šenkovići, 8 km from Novi Travnik, offers a different kind of cultural heritage. It is considered the oldest architectural structure from the period of Turkish rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was declared a national monument on 14 November 2005.

Natural features also form part of the area’s character: beneath Vilinska kosa lies Vilinska pećina, which was recognised as a natural rarity of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1954. Its steep entrance, spacious halls and numerous formations of stalagmites and stalactites shape its description.

Rostovo and Outdoor Activities

Rostovo is a mountain plateau in the municipality of Novi Travnik in central Bosnia. It lies at an elevation of about 998 to 1,100 metres; the landscape includes meadows, pastures and forests and is rich in spring water. Activities here include hiking, cycling and photography, as well as a visit to the Maculje stećak necropolis. Seasonal conditions may affect access to these activities.

For those considering a longer hike, there is a specific guide for the challenging Sebešić–Novi Travnik route: a 2026 event listing gives a distance of about 30 km and a duration of around nine hours. Future editions may be organised differently. This makes the hike a priority in its own right when planning your time, rather than a short addition between other visits.

Town Centre and Culture

The centre of Novi Travnik includes the main square, promenades and industrial heritage architecture. The Dom kulture Novi Travnik cultural centre is in the town centre and within walking distance of the main square. It hosts the inBox Festival and Rujanski susreti, as well as theatre performances and exhibitions; individual event dates may change.

Completed in 1956, the Radnički dom workers’ centre included a library, rooms for various community activities, a cinema and a catering establishment. Today, it is the town’s cultural centre. A visit to the centre can therefore be combined with a look at the architecture of the square and promenades; if you plan to time your trip around a festival or performance, check the dates in advance.

The Smrike memorial necropolis was built in 1975 in memory of about 700 civilians who were killed at this site in 1941; it was designed by architect Bogdan Bogdanović. It is located on Čamića Brdo. From the centre of Novi Travnik, it can be reached in a few minutes by car via the road towards Vitez or Travnik; the entrance is on the main road and is signposted. As road conditions and signage may change, it is advisable to check the route before your visit.

Planning Your Stay

If you are looking for a hotel in Novi Travnik, it is best to start with your priorities: would you like to spend more time in the town centre and enjoy its cultural programme, or are the stećak necropolises and Rostovo your main focus? Allow a separate, longer block of time for the challenging hike.
