Discover Großdorf from three different perspectives: a cross-country ski trail with an approximate loop distance, paths featuring striking bridges, and local history with clearly dated milestones. The circular walk “Suspended Above the Subersach,” the “Egg Walk” and the “Art in Egg” tour each have their own route or scope. This lets you weigh outdoor activity and local culture according to your interests, without conflating different offerings into a single tour.

Cross-country ski trail and circular walk

The Großdorf cross-country ski trail lies on a sunny plateau. One loop is about 3.5 kilometres long; the trail is considered suitable for beginners and families. The loop distance and suitability answer different questions and help you assess the offering. Parking for the trail is available in the village centre near the Landammannsaal Großdorf. As parking arrangements may change, check the situation before your visit.

The circular walk “Suspended Above the Subersach” has a different focus: it crosses the Drahtsteg, also known as the suspension bridge, and the old covered bridge in Gschwendtobel. The route follows the Negrelliweg towards Großdorf and returns to the centre of Egg via the Galgen on the Feldweg Egg. The bridges mark two specific highlights along the way; the return to Egg is also part of the route’s orientation. This clearly distinguishes the route from the ski trail, whose loop distance is described.

Großdorf in relation to Egg

The “Egg Walk” also continues into the Großdorf district. Some residents of Großdorf regard Großdorf as the main part of the twin village; this remains a point of view. Compared with Egg, which is characterised by stone houses, “wooden” Großdorf stands out. The comparison thus places two different architectural styles side by side without presenting a subjective view as a universally accepted statement.

Another circular route from Egg goes via Großdorf to Schetteregg and returns via Ebenwald. Its sequence of waypoints provides its own orientation and should not be confused with the route of the “Egg Walk” or the circular walk “Suspended Above the Subersach.” To keep the routes clear, you can use their respective named landmarks: the bridges and return to Egg for the circular walk, the Großdorf district for the “Egg Walk,” and Schetteregg and Ebenwald for the other circular route.

Art and local history

A brochure on “Art in Egg” introduces 14 works of art and their creators in the village centres of Egg and Großdorf. The last two stops on the tour are in Großdorf, by the aforementioned war memorial and on the façade wall of the primary school. These locations provide specific points of reference for the Großdorf section; the brochure’s scope also includes both village centres. This helps put the local section in context without equating it with the entire tour.

St. Joseph’s Church in Großdorf was built from 1760 to 1762 to plans by Kaspar Waldner, consecrated in 1770 and elevated to parish church status in 1883. This sequence comprises three distinct historical steps: the construction period, the consecration and the later elevation to parish church status. An earlier date adds to this history: the Sebastiani Brotherhood in Großdorf was founded in 1720. Thus, alongside the development of the church, the founding and history of a brotherhood provide a separate point of reference in time.

When choosing between the themes, Großdorf offers specific distinctions: an approximate distance for the cross-country skiing loop, bridges and waypoints for the walks, art locations in the village centre, and historical dates relating to the church and brotherhood.
