Two distinctive ways to experience Hittisau are the Women’s Museum, which explores the history and culture of women, and the Water Trail, with its old covered wooden bridge and the Engenloch Gorge. There is also a contemporary memorial, the parish church, consecrated in 1845, and seasonal cross-country skiing. Depending on whether culture, scenery or winter activities are your main focus, you will discover different sides of the village.

Women’s Museum and Remembrance

The Hittisau Women’s Museum is the first and only women’s museum in Austria. Its exhibitions explore the history and culture of women; its accompanying program includes talks, concerts, symposia, guided tours and school workshops. Exhibitions are its main focus, while discussion, music, guided tour and workshop formats offer other ways to engage with the subject. For travelers specifically interested in women’s history, the museum is a clear cultural highlight in Hittisau.

DENK.MAL has a distinct focus. It commemorates people who lost their lives in wars and in systematic killings under National Socialism. As a contemporary place of remembrance, it points to the past and invites reflection and conversation.

Historic Sites and Trails

Hittisau Parish Church was consecrated in 1845 in honor of the Three Holy Kings. Alongside the contemporary memorial, this provides a clearly dated point of reference for church history during a cultural stay. Hittisau is also one of the villages traversed by specially designated “Umgang” trails. This adds a regional trail connection to the individual cultural sites, making it possible to view Hittisau as part of a network of trails that passes through several villages.

Water Trail and Rotenberg

The Hittisau Water Trail starts at the village fountain. It leads to the Kommabrücke, around 300 years old and described as the oldest covered wooden bridge in the region, then follows the Bolgenach to the Engenloch Gorge and its overhanging rock formations. The route combines the bridge’s cultural and historical interest with the gorge’s natural scenery.

At Rotenberg, two trails can be distinguished by their features: the Rotenberg circular hike starts at the village square, while the Rotenberg themed trail has 20 stations. Unlike the Water Trail, with its bridge and gorge, the focus here is on a route designated as a circular hike and the stations along the themed trail.

Cross-Country Skiing in Winter

Seasonal cross-country skiing is another option in winter. Hittisau has a sunny village loop, while the Grenzland trail runs between Hittisau and Balderschwang for more than 70 kilometers. The difference is in the route: one is a loop in Hittisau, the other a trail between two villages. These options give you different starting points for planning a winter visit—a local loop or a route with named endpoints and a length of more than 70 kilometers.

Regional Specialties

The dairy shop at Sennerei Hittisau offers mountain cheese from its own maturing cellar, as well as numerous other regional specialties. Alongside the specifically named mountain cheese, there is a wider selection of regional products. If you are interested in what is on offer, check the current selection before visiting, as product and service details may change.
