Egg’s centre can only be reached via bridges. This distinctive feature provides a practical starting point for finding your way around: you can explore the town through its history, routes that cross bridges or seasonal leisure activities. The Egg Museum, the “Egg in the Days of Felder” route and the “Floating Above the Subersach” circular trail appeal to different interests.
History at the museum and around the church
The Egg Museum was founded in 1904 as a local history museum. After its collections had been in storage for several years, it reopened in 1988 in the former school and municipal building dating from 1899. The museum presents one or two exhibitions each year relating to the Bregenzerwald. There are also guided tours of the exhibitions, special events and programmes, and dedicated programmes for children. If you are planning to visit a particular exhibition or take part in a children’s programme, check the current programme in advance; availability may change.
The “Egg in the Days of Felder” route takes you to important buildings around Egg Church and brings to life what happened there more than 100 years ago. A backpack containing useful materials and audio recordings helps you explore. The “Floating Above the Subersach” circular trail offers a different focus: it crosses the Drahtsteg suspension bridge as well as the old covered wooden bridge in Gschwendtobel. Check the trail and bridge conditions locally before planning your walk.
The covered wooden bridge in Gschwendtobel was built in 1833 and is attributed to Alois Negrelli. Elias BrĂĽgel provides another link to the past: the memorial commemorates people who died during the leprosy epidemic.
Plan cycling and walking routes
The Egg–Schoppernau walking and cycling path starts in Egg and is 30 km long. Take the distance into account when planning your trip, and check current route conditions locally. In the Achtal valley, part of the Bregenzerwald cycle path follows the former route of the Wälderbahn railway from Egg to Doren. The route options therefore offer different features to consider: the length of the Egg–Schoppernau path and the former railway line in the Achtal valley.
Seasonal experiences and regional insights
Egg’s outdoor swimming pool has a diving tower with 1- and 3-metre platforms, as well as a 50-metre-long slide. Egg swimming pool also has a separate children’s pool with a baby slide. As this is a seasonal outdoor pool and operating details may change, check the current seasonal information before visiting.
At the Obere Falz alpine pasture, you can watch alpine cheese being made in person. If this experience is important to your stay, ask in advance about the best time to visit.
