The Pöndorf region is characterised by a high moraine landscape, formed by glacial deposits, accumulations and sediment from the Ice Age. Pöndorf lies in the Vöcklatal region, on the Kobernaußerwald and near the lakes of the Salzkammergut. Its hilly, wooded landscape offers views as far as the Dachstein. Its proximity to the Salzkammergut lakes describes the wider regional setting; forests, hills and views as far as the Dachstein define Pöndorf’s own landscape.
Border history: dates, stones and church
From 1437 to 1779, a total of 342 years, the Landgraben was the border between Austria and Bavaria. The Landgraben cultural monument commemorates this boundary. All 26 boundary stones bear “GF” for Grafschaft Frankenburg on the Austrian side and “LF” for Landgericht Friedburg on the Bavarian side. St. Maximilian’s Parish Church in Pöndorf still has two entrances, recalling its former division by the Landgraben. The border history is thus reflected in different ways: in a period of time, in the inscriptions on the stones and in a feature of the church’s architecture.
The Grafenstein on today’s municipal boundary
The Grafenstein is the southernmost and most important of the 25 Austrian-Bavarian boundary stones that still stand today along the current municipal boundary between Waldzell and Redleiten, Frankenburg, Fornach and Pöndorf. This description combines its special status among the boundary stones with a specific geographical location.
Chapels with distinct settings
The Heilig-Bründl Chapel stands in a field between Bergham and Forstern, towards the Landgraben; a small spring murmurs beside it. The Mattheisen Chapel is on the edge of the village of Pading and offers views across the fields to Forstern and the surrounding villages. The settings are distinct: here, the field location and spring shape the scene; there, the village edge and views across fields and villages. Those interested in religious sites will find two distinctive points of interest.
Hiking in the extensive woodland
Pöndorf’s extensive woodland is particularly well suited to hiking on marked trails. Together with its hills, it offers a clear focus for travellers who enjoy spending time outdoors. When choosing a theme for your trip, you can weigh this connection with nature against cultural and historical points of interest such as the boundary stones, the Landgraben and the parish church. This makes it easy to decide whether hiking or the history of the town should take centre stage.
The church calendar and farm-gate products
First Communion is celebrated in Pöndorf every year on Ascension Day. The exact date varies from year to year, but the celebration always takes place on Ascension Day. For travellers interested in religious traditions, it is a recurring event in the community’s annual calendar.
Pöndorf also has farm-gate sales of organically grown agricultural products. This adds a direct connection with agriculture to the themes of hiking and cultural heritage. If you would like to include local organic products in your travel plans, these sales are another aspect to consider when choosing a destination.
