Church art, documented local history and a mill trail shape the options for a stay in Niederthalheim. The village lies in the northern part of the Vöcklabruck district, in the Hausruckviertel at the foot of the Hausruck hills. Different themes can guide your plans: architectural history and sacred art on the one hand, and a trail associated with former mills on the other. You can choose the focus of your stay based on whether you are mainly interested in historic buildings or a themed route.

Churches, Art and Local History

The parish church, dedicated to Saint Margaret, stands in the centre of the village. The present church building was constructed in 1913 in the Neo-Baroque style, based on plans by Linz master builder Friedrich Gangl. The large vault fresco in the presbytery depicts the Fourteen Holy Helpers, the four Evangelists, and the Prince Apostles Peter and Paul. The architecture and its imagery thus offer two different perspectives on the same church: the architectural history of the early 20th century and the religious art inside the church.

The Marian chapel, dating from 1822, offers an earlier point of reference in the village’s architectural history. A documentary record from 927 takes us further back, mentioning Niederthalheim under the name Talaheimon. These two dates give the village’s history a longer time frame: the chapel is significantly older than today’s parish church, and the recorded name reaches back many centuries further. A historic road from Tergolape (Schwanenstadt) to Bojodorum (Passau) also crossed the area. With its endpoints, it adds a link to the wider region to the local historical context.

Different features are recorded for the branch church in Hainbach: it is a Gothic church dating from the 15th century. The Catholic Church of the Holy Cross in Hainbach is protected as a historic monument by decree and is listed in the Federal Monuments Authority’s 2025 register of monuments in Upper Austria. Compared with the Neo-Baroque parish church of 1913, Hainbach represents a significantly earlier period of construction and a different style. Niederthalheim is therefore home to sacred buildings from several different periods.

Explore the Seven Mills Trail on Foot

The Seven Mills Trail consists of the 2-Mill Trail and the 5-Mill Trail and is approximately nine kilometres long in total. The approximate overall distance helps you gauge the route as a standalone activity; the names of the two sections show how it is divided. At seven stops, information boards tell visitors about former local mills, with additional information available via QR codes. The mills are therefore not just part of the trail’s name, but also the subject of its stops. If you choose a walk for its theme rather than just its distance, this route offers a tangible link to the history of milling in the area.

Plan a Cycling Trip

“Leisurely Cycling” adds a separate cycling option. The meeting point is Niederthalheim Primary School, Kirchenstraße 1, 4692 Niederthalheim; the route is decided before the ride begins. An event notice lists rides every Wednesday, except in bad weather, though the schedule may change. Check the dates when planning your trip. For the ride, the specific meeting point and a route set before departure are relevant, while the Wednesday notice provides a timing guide that you should confirm in advance.
