Desselbrunn combines a landscape shaped by rivers and wooded areas with distinctive cultural and traditional features. The Traun Waterfall represents both the history of the town and the river landscape, which can be explored in different directions. Windern Castle and the Leonhardi Ride offer further focal points. This gives you a way to get your bearings in Desselbrunn based on whether you are most interested in the landscape, architectural history or regional customs.
River Landscape and the Traun Waterfall
The Traun is part of the river landscape in which Desselbrunn is set; wooded areas and extensive riverbanks shape its idyllic location. The Traun Waterfall has long been the shared historical centre of Desselbrunn and Roitham am Traunfall. The historic Schiffsleut Chapel has also been preserved in the Traun Waterfall area. The landscape, a distinctive connection to the river and a specific historic site are therefore closely linked thematically.
If you would like to combine the river setting with a hiking route, the “Enjoy the Traun River” trail runs from the Almspitz along the Alm and the Traun to Lake Traunsee, passing through Desselbrunn along the way. The route thus combines a longer stretch with a local connection to the Traun Waterfall. The Traunfallweg was reopened to visitors in autumn 1981. If you plan to visit today, check current access in advance.
Castle History and the Leonhardi Ride
Windern Castle is privately owned and was built in the 16th or early 17th century. Following serious fires in 1817 and 1866, it was repaired on several occasions. The castle chapel is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk and was built in 1769. Its broadly elliptical domed space contains three Rococo altars dating from the time of its construction. The castle’s layered history thus meets the more specifically defined architecture of the chapel.
The Leonhardi Ride offers another cultural point of reference in the annual calendar. In Desselbrunn, it has been held every year since 1946 on the Sunday after 6 November in honour of the parish’s patron saint. If this custom is important to your trip, check the specific event date in advance. Unlike the enduring themes of landscape and architectural history, the Leonhardi Ride takes place at a particular time of year.
Diving, Horse Riding and Travel Planning
Diving and horse riding are also local points of interest. The Atlantis Qualidive Traunfall diving centre is located at Viecht am Traunfall 10a. Western and English riding are welcome at the Desselbrunn Riding and Driving Club. These features complement the river landscape and cultural heritage with different interests, without describing the same travel experience: the diving centre offers a specific connection to the water, while the riding club mentions two riding styles.
The list of places on Route 51 of the Salzkammergut Shuttle gives an overview of its route, but does not provide information about specific stops. It runs via Laakirchen, Traunfall, Rüstorf, Stadl-Paura, Lambach and Almspitz; the Traun Waterfall is in the municipality of Desselbrunn. Check the latest route information before travelling.
