Neukirchen an der Vöckla combines traditional crafts and local history with excursions on foot and by bike. At Stehrerhof, traditional crafts and demonstrations take centre stage; the parish church of Neukirchen an der Vöckla was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century and was remodelled in the Baroque style after a fire in 1766. Other attractions include Reittümpel, a bathing spot, and the attractions at OBRA Kinderland.
Traditional Crafts and History
At the crafts house in the Stehrerhof open-air museum, around 70 crafts and activities are presented, most of them in working order. The crafts on display are demonstrated at the craft days held several times a year. The threshing week at Stehrerhof is also a recurring event: it has been held in September since 1979. If you would like to see a demonstration, include the specific event dates in your travel plans.
The parish church of Neukirchen an der Vöckla offers another perspective on local history. It is a listed monument and was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. Originally late Gothic, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style after a fire in 1766. These dates mark different periods in its history: its early written mention and a later alteration to the building.
Routes and Landscape
The Vöcklatal hiking trail begins in the town centre and heads south or east, passing the Stehrerhof open-air museum on its way to Sonnleiten and then Redl. The trail then follows the Mixentalerbach stream.
The wetland area of Weyr-Welsern lies to the east at the start of the Neukirchen Spieleweg. It covers around 2.7 hectares and is designated as a landscape conservation area. At the play stations, information boards indicate the distance to the next point.
Reittümpel is considered a popular bathing spot for young and old alike. Swimming conditions may vary by season, so take this into account when planning a day of swimming.
Active Excursions and Visit Planning
OBRA Kinderland offers large climbing towers, long suspension bridges, fast slides and water attractions. During the school holidays, it is scheduled to open daily from 10 am to 6 pm; in bad weather, the park may remain closed. Before your visit, check whether it will be open on your planned day.
For cyclists, a circular route runs from Neukirchen to Ampflwang and Frankenburg and back. It is more than 35 kilometres long and includes 460 metres of descent and 420 metres of ascent. As route conditions can change, it is worth checking the route before setting off.
The Stehrerhof open-air museum lists seasonal opening hours from 1 April to 31 October: Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm; it is closed on Mondays. Before your visit, check whether these hours apply to your chosen date. If a demonstration is important to your trip, also take the event dates for the threshing week and craft days into account.
