Mondsee offers a variety of themes for a trip: monastery history and written culture sit alongside traditional rural architecture, lake activities and cycling tours. You can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Monastery, Museum and Early History of Writing

The Pile-Dwelling and Monastery Museum presents the history of pile-dwelling cultures, Mondsee Monastery and the Mondsee scriptorium. The pile dwellings in Mondsee were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. The museum’s history includes the former St. Benedict’s Chapel, with frescoes dating from the end of the 13th century. The former Gothic monastery library in Mondsee is 36 metres long and currently serves as an exhibition space for the Mondseeland Museum; check whether it is being used for an exhibition before your visit. In the monastery’s early days, the Mondsee scriptorium was of regional importance. The “Mondsee Fragments,” written around 825, are considered the earliest translation of parts of the Bible into Old High German.

The museum is open from 1 May to 26 October, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Group tours outside opening hours are available by prior arrangement. Check the seasonal opening times when planning, especially if a museum visit is an essential part of your stay.

Cultural Trail and Traces of Everyday Life

The Mondsee Cultural Trail is a walkable cultural tour that follows the traces of history to local sights. The Franztal Local History Room offers a distinct cultural focus, displaying traditional costumes, garments, embroidery, documents, old plans, records and other exhibits from the Franztal ethnic group. Alongside the monastery’s history, the collections also bring folk culture into focus.

At the Mondsee Farm and Open-Air Museum, the “Unterer Bischofer” Rauchhaus is one of the last examples of a threatened type of house and is considered a monument to traditional rural life. The property was first mentioned in a document in 1416; the year 1708 is carved into the ridge of the Rauchhaus. The two dates refer to different things: 1416 marks the property’s first documented mention, while 1708 is visible as a date on the building.

Basilica, Art and Historic Routes

The three-aisled basilica interior of Mondsee Basilica is one of Austria’s most outstanding and largest ecclesiastical architectural monuments. Works by Meinrad Guggenbichler can be seen in St. Michael’s Basilica. He lived in Mondsee from 1678 to 1723 and had his workshop there. St. Michael’s Basilica is also a stop on the Via Nova pilgrimage route. These different connections make architecture, artworks and the pilgrimage route distinct ways to explore the town’s history.

The history of transport can also be explored: the 3.5-kilometre branch line of the Salzkammergut Local Railway branched off at St. Lorenz towards Mondsee. It belongs to the history of the former rail connection and does not indicate that trains operate there today.

Landscape, Cycling and Water

Steep rock faces, wooded slopes and meadows shape the landscape around Mondsee; the Drachenwand in particular defines the scenery on the southern shore. The Mondsee-Irrsee region has 150 kilometres of hiking trails between gentle hills and striking mountains. Cycling options around Mondsee range from a loop around the lake to tours into the mountains. This gives you different options for planning, from rides by the lake to mountain tours.

You can go stand-up paddleboarding on Mondsee; yoga on a stand-up paddleboard is also available. Surfing and sailing courses also offer the opportunity to learn kitesurfing. The Alpenseebad Mondsee has around 13,000 square metres of lawns and sunbathing areas. Facilities mentioned include jetties, a diving tower, slides, a sandy beach, table tennis and a buffet; individual facilities and operating conditions may vary seasonally.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

For a cultural stay, the museum, cultural trail, local history room and buildings offer a range of themes to explore. If you would rather focus on being active, you can choose between cycling around the lake and tours into the mountains, or include the water sports mentioned above.
