A Baroque nativity scene from the 18th century, a Renaissance building on the Vöckla and trails with views of the Northern Limestone Alps give Frankenmarkt a distinctive character shaped by cultural history and landscape. When planning your stay, you can decide whether historical art, woodland trails or family-friendly attractions are of particular interest.

Baroque Nativity Scene and Historic Buildings

The citizens of Frankenmarkt commissioned the Baroque nativity scene in the 18th century in gratitude for being spared the plague. Its figures are about 30 centimetres tall and, in keeping with the style of the nativity scene, are dressed in fine French brocade embroidered with gold. Its artistic significance lies in the masterful carvings by Mondsee sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler and his successor Anton Koch. The nativity scene thus combines a local memory with skilled craftsmanship: its origins, materials and carvings each offer a different insight into its history.

Schloss Stauff is also one of Frankenmarkt’s historic buildings. It stands on the right bank of the Vöckla, close to Frankenmarkt station. The three-storey Renaissance building has a hipped roof. The Marktmuseum Frankomarchia, meanwhile, focuses on the development of the town’s commercial and industrial centre, as well as its former administration and judicial system: exhibits in the market hall illustrate key periods in the history of this important commercial and industrial centre, while the council chamber is furnished in the Renaissance style and reflects the town’s former administration and judicial system.

If you are planning a guided tour of the Marktmuseum, arrange it by phone and confirm the date in advance. Tours are available by telephone appointment.

Panorama Trail, Way of St James and Landscape

The Panorama Trail offers views of the Northern Limestone Alps. In Frankenmarkt, part of the Frankenmarkt Panorama Trail overlaps with the Austrian Way of St James. The route continues via Vöcklamarkt and Frankenmarkt to Oberhofen am Irrsee, following historic paths that were already laid out in Roman times. The Panorama Trail highlights views of the Limestone Alps, while the Way of St James is notable for its long-distance route and the history of the connections between these paths.

The trail to Hohes Kreuz offers a different landscape: it leads to a wooden cross surrounded by fields and meadows, with views of the Totes Gebirge, Traunstein, Höllengebirge and Schafberg. Waldidylle, by contrast, focuses on the forest. This family hike leads into Frankenmarkt’s approximately 200-hectare communal forest and includes a biotope and a Kneipp trail. The Kneipp trail is by Bräubründl, which flows into three ponds.

The Heiliges BrĂĽndl spring is also associated with local folklore: tradition holds that its water has healing properties for eye ailments. This is a traditional belief, not a medical claim.

Family Outings and Other Activities

The Zwergerlweg is a popular destination for families with young children. Along the trail, you’ll find fairy-tale figures, mythical creatures and dwarfs. Waldidylle offers another family hike, with its biotope, Kneipp trail and route through the communal forest providing a different focus.

The Frankenmarkt Erlebnisbad has a 54-metre water slide. Behind the outdoor pool, there is also a fitness trail with a herb path and bee-friendly planting. If you’re travelling by bike, you can take a branch route from the Roman Cycle Path in Frankenmarkt to continue to Lake Attersee. The Roman Cycle Path rest area has tables and benches; three-part information boards and an audio guide provide additional information.
