At the foot of the Hongar lies Aurach am Hongar. Circular trails and mountain biking on the mountain sit alongside a listed parish church, the Hongarkreuz memorial and a small local history museum. This offers different ways to shape your stay: you can give different emphasis to outdoor activities, local history and regional remembrance.
Circular trails and activities on the Hongar
The Hongar circular trail leads via the Hongaralm to the Hongar summit. The 943-metre-high Hongar is also suitable for mountain biking and offers views across the region. On the same mountain, you can choose between a hike to the summit, cycling and taking in the views over the surrounding area.
The Hosenflicker circular trail starts at Gasthaus Pfarl. Along the way, you can take a short break and read the legend of the Hosenflickerweg. The two trails differ in their named features: the summit is the destination on the Hongar circular trail, while the starting point at the inn and the legend are landmarks on the Hosenflicker circular trail. Aurach am Hongar is also connected to the Attersee-Salzkammergut cycle network. This means regional cycling is another distinct activity to consider when planning, alongside the circular trails.
Parish church and heritage conservation
Local history also offers a clearly dated point of reference. On 25 July 1888, a fire destroyed the parish church in Aurach am Hongar, dedicated to Saint Alexius. Bishop Franz Maria Doppelbauer consecrated the new parish church on 23 August 1893. These dates tell the story of its destruction and subsequent reconstruction. The Catholic parish church of St Alexius is protected as a historic monument by regulation.
The Schimpl Chapel is also protected as a historic monument by regulation. This makes it a second named listed building alongside the parish church. Anyone interested in local heritage conservation can explore the two buildings as separate topics.
Places of remembrance and an annual event
The Hongarkreuz stands on the Hongar. It is a district memorial erected by the Farmers’ Union for all those who have lost their lives in agriculture and forestry. Its dedication gives the mountain a clear connection to remembrance, alongside its hiking and cycling attractions. The Hongar mountain mass is held every year on the last Sunday in July. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the date for the relevant year in advance.
Local history museum and leisure pool
The Auracher Troadkasten houses a small local history museum with traditional farming tools and equipment. This provides another way to explore local and regional history: here, the focus is on agricultural implements rather than church architecture. Those interested in the material culture of rural life will find a distinct area of interest here.
The solar-heated Aurach am Hongar leisure pool has a large water slide and extensive sunbathing lawns. Unlike the Hongar’s trails and cultural sites, the focus here is on the water slide and sunbathing lawns.
