Weyregg am Attersee lies on the eastern shore of the lake, at the foot of the Höllengebirge/Hongar cultural and landscape park. The town offers more than just one theme to help you plan your visit: archaeological traces from different eras meet along the shore, alongside an aquarium, the Landesbad and destinations such as the Gahberg Observatory. This lets you combine cultural discoveries with time by the water or a trip to the surrounding area.

Pile-dwelling remains and Roman history

The remains of Austria’s largest known pile-dwelling settlement lie on the lakebed in Weyregg Bay. They are located between the landing stage and Steinwandeck to the south. Another trace of the past can be seen in the area of today’s landing stage: remains of a Roman harbour facility have been preserved there.

The remains of a Roman luxury villa with several mosaic floors are also part of the town’s history. They suggest that the tradition of summer holidays on Lake Attersee most likely dates back to the Romans. This interpretation links the archaeological finds to a question about the early origins of stays by the lake, without equating the different find sites and eras.

The Roman exhibition is housed in the former post office of the Weyregg am Attersee municipal offices. A 3D model shows a Roman luxury villa overlooking the lake; finds from the excavations are displayed in cases. Check current access to the exhibition before visiting.

By the water and under the stars

The Attersee Aquarium is in Weyregg, right next to the music pavilion. It is 4.5 metres long and holds 9,000 litres of water. Visitors can see numerous fish from Lake Attersee, including pike, Danube bleak, perch, bleak, lake trout, roach and rudd. The list of species makes the aquarium a specific insight into the lake’s fish life.

The Landesbad in Weyregg has two bathing jetties, a water trampoline, a children’s playground, sanitary facilities and changing rooms. Alongside the historical sites, facilities by the water are also part of the townscape. You can consider these amenities as a separate focus when planning your visit.

A different perspective awaits on a trip to the Gahberg Observatory. It is located on Gahberg at an altitude of 860 metres and can be reached from Weyregg by car in about ten minutes. Parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the observatory. Its specialist telescopes are used to observe the moon, planets, the sun and faint objects, as well as for astrophotography using conventional and digital photography. When planning your visit, you can choose between experiences by the lake and astronomy at the Gahberg Observatory as distinct themes.

Hiking and getting here

A hiking trail leads from Weyregg am Attersee to the Bruckbacher Hoarstube. During a guided tour there, visitors learn about the former importance of flax in the region. The trail and tour combine a hike with an insight into regional history. This offers another cultural theme alongside the Roman finds, with a different historical focus.

To get here from Salzburg, Linz or Vienna, first travel to Attnang-Puchheim or Vöcklabruck; from there, bus No. 562 continues to Weyregg. Check the connection before travelling. When choosing a hotel in Weyregg, you can consider which of the town’s different facets you want to shape your plans: archaeological finds, time by the water, astronomy or a hike with a connection to regional history.
