Timelkam offers different ways to explore architectural history, local history and technology. Its historical highlights range from a castle that existed around 909 to a late Baroque country estate; there is also an energy museum, a local history museum and a museum railway running along a former coal railway. When planning your trip, consider which of these themes you would like to explore in more depth.

Two Different Architectural Histories

Altwartenburg Castle was an imperial castle around 909. This medieval castle, built on two hills, later underwent major structural changes: most of it was demolished in the 18th century, and the remaining ruins are now heavily deteriorated. This makes it possible to distinguish between the site’s early origins and its later demolition as two widely separated historical phases.

Neuwartenburg Palace is a different building and a different chapter: Count Johann Albert Saint Julien, Chief Falconer to the Habsburg imperial court, had it built on the banks of the Vöckla between 1730 and 1732 as a late Baroque country estate. The ensemble includes a park laid out together with the estate. The central section contains a grand hall with a large painting by Bartolomäo Altomonte. The focus here is on the creation of a country estate, its park and a specific named feature of its interior.

Museums Dedicated to Energy and Local History

The Erlebniswelt Energie Museum features the exhibitions “Electricity Today” and “Stories of Electricity,” as well as the multimedia film experience “Allow Me to Introduce Myself: Electricity.” Historical exhibits, old plans and electrical appliances are combined with interactive information systems and modern information technology. Visitors can explore the subject through both historical objects and multimedia presentations. As exhibitions may change, check the latest information before your visit.

The Timelkam Archive and Local History Museum focuses on a different subject: its municipal chronicle comprises about 2,000 pages of text and about 2,000 images, documenting local history over several centuries. It also has a dedicated projection room. There, presentations or films give visitors insights into the history of the market town of Timelkam and the Timelkam manorial estates. The chronicle and projections offer two distinct approaches: extensive written and visual documentation, and audiovisual presentation.

Museum Railway and Routes

The museum railway between Timelkam and Ampflwang runs along a 10.5-kilometre former coal railway. It operates historic steam and diesel locomotives and historic railcars. The journey begins at the “Timelkam Energie-AG” stop, a five-minute walk from Timelkam ÖBB station. Nostalgia trains run on selected days; check the current timetable before travelling.

For a walking loop, Timelkam Route 4 is a clearly described option: the circular route follows the Vöckla to Leidern and returns via Aderstraße to the TIWI site. The route connects these named sections into a loop; check trail conditions before setting out. Cyclists can stop and recharge at the Römerradweg rest area in Timelkam. The information boards there describe the entire route, the cyclists’ current location and the history of the Romans at this site.

To plan your time, you can compare two activities: a guided tour of the Erlebniswelt Energie Museum takes about one hour, while the museum railway ride takes about 30 minutes. Museum admission is free; check the latest visitor information in advance. Depending on how much time you have, you can choose how to balance architectural and local history, technology and a ride on the historic railway.
