The Jahresstiege leads from the Große Rodl to Pfarrerwiese via 365 granite steps. It was built in the 19th century to provide work for people in poverty. In this way, Gramastetten connects a tangible structure with its social history. Alongside these historic landmarks, hiking trails, activities on the water and regional specialities shape the visitor experience. Which themes take centre stage also depends on whether you are looking more for culture, exercise or regional cuisine.
Hiking and Activities on the Rodl
There are currently 24 marked hiking trails in Gramastetten. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out on a specific hike. A walk along the Rodl is also suitable for inexperienced hikers and families. To explore the landscape, you can take routes on foot, by bike or on horseback.
In spring, you can kayak on the Große Rodl; water levels and safety conditions depend on the season. In Gramastetten, climbers can climb at a natural rock face and on a climbing wall. Check local access and safety conditions before climbing. The Rodl-Waldbad has a sunbathing lawn, changing rooms and showers, as well as a children's playground and a paddling pool. Admission is free. As an outdoor swimming pool, it is a seasonal facility; check its current status before visiting.
There is a clear difference when choosing when to travel: kayaking on the Große Rodl is possible in spring, while the Rodl-Waldbad is seasonal. If you are planning a hotel stay in Gramastetten, this information can help you match outdoor activities to your preferred travel dates and include cultural history as another focus.
Churches, a Mill and Local History
At Galgenbühel, east of the market town, the parish community had the Kalvarienbergkirche and its Way of the Cross built between 1831 and 1834. The church contains a votive painting by Johann Meindl dating from 1853. A series of paintings by Hugo Gielge from 1958 draws in part on wartime experiences.
A document dated 16 April 1444 records the construction of a new parish church dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The new building was probably already complete by the time Gramastetten was granted market town status in 1518. The dates place the history of the parish church in context without presenting the uncertain completion date as fact.
The Steublmühle is a watermill more than 500 years old. Its machinery is largely preserved; some of it is more than 120 years old. The Bergquelle Augenbründl has been mentioned in documents since the 16th century. Lichtenhag first appears in historical records as a castle in 1455.
Regional Specialities
