Vorderweißenbach offers several distinct starting points for a stay: Sternstein and its lookout tower, Hirschenstein and its granite formations, chapels along hiking trails, and the Underground Riverbed. If you plan your trip around specific destinations, you can choose between panoramic views, a mountain ridge, religious lore and a stone riverbed. The variety lies in these different themes—from distant views to local trail connections.

Sternstein and Hirschenstein

Sternstein is 1,125 metres high, lies within the municipality of Vorderweißenbach and is the highest elevation in the central Mühlviertel. Built in 1899, the Sternstein lookout tower offers panoramic views stretching from Bohemia to the Alpine region. Its height, standing and views give Sternstein a clear prominence in the landscape. Hirschenstein offers a different focus: at 1,026 metres, it is the second-highest elevation on the northern ridge; granite formations and unspoilt nature define the area. Hirschenstein can be reached via hiking trail No. 43a, the “Windpark Runde” (Wind Farm Loop). The two elevations can therefore be distinguished by their specific features: at Sternstein, the lookout tower and sweeping panorama take centre stage, while Hirschenstein is known for its granite formations and access via hiking trail No. 43a.

Chapels along hiking trails

Pfann Chapel was built in 1887. Three hiking trails pass directly by it: No. 24, the “Sternsteinweg” (Sternstein Trail); No. 24a, the “Oköwanderweg” (Okö Hiking Trail); and No. 44, the “Windparkrunde” (Wind Farm Loop). Hiking trail No. 24 begins and ends in Vorderweißenbach. This gives the Sternstein Trail two clear points of reference: its start and finish in the village, and Pfann Chapel, which it passes.

Wald Chapel is located directly on hiking trails V8, the “Schönegger Runde” (Schönegger Loop); V9, the “Kleine Waldkapellenrunde” (Small Forest Chapels Loop); and V10, the “Große Waldkapellenrunde” (Large Forest Chapels Loop). A pious local legend links the chapel to a stone with three bowl-shaped hollows: according to the story, the Holy Family rested at this stone on their flight to Egypt. Wald Chapel thus brings together specific hiking trail connections and a traditional religious story.

The Underground Riverbed

The Underground Riverbed is a natural spectacle in the form of a river made of stones. The route begins on the V10 “Große Waldkapellenrunde” (Large Forest Chapels Loop) and continues to the Hofau farm road, then follows a short stretch of the “Sterngartl Rundweg” (Sterngartl Circular Trail), before continuing along the underpass by the main road. For navigation, the order of the named sections is important. As trail conditions may change locally, check the route before your visit.

Culture and travel

Each year, the cultural committee of the market municipality, the association community and local associations organise a programme for the “Vorderweißenbach cultural scene.” Local cultural life thus adds another travel-related dimension to the nature and trail themes. Travel options to Vorderweißenbach include connections from Linz Central Station and Haslach railway station. Check the specific connection for your travel date before setting off.
