Engerwitzdorf is surrounded by greenery, yet close to the state capital. Its cultural profile ranges from the Ägidikircherl chapel in Hohenstein and the Gattersäge sawmill in Wolfing to the Im Schöffl cultural centre. Other attractions include the Treffling memorial, the history of the historic horse-drawn railway and the Meiche collection. Engerwitzdorf thus offers several cultural perspectives when choosing a place to stay: landscape, religious tradition, the history of technology, commemorative culture and events.

Ägidikircherl Chapel and Circular Trail in Hohenstein

The Ägidikircherl chapel in Hohenstein was first documented in 1519. Steep cliffs lie in its surroundings, and the Ägidikirche circular trail passes by the chapel. Those who wish to consider cultural history and landscape together will find two clear points of reference here: the church’s historical mention and its rocky setting. Every year, usually in early November, a mass is held at the Ägidikircherl in honour of Saint Hubertus. If this date is important for your trip, check the exact date before travelling.

The Gattersäge Sawmill in Wolfing

The Gattersäge sawmill in Wolfing offers a different focus. It began operating on 1 May 1937 and remained in operation until the mid-1980s. It stayed at its original site afterwards and was renovated in 2010 and 2011. Its operating history and subsequent renovation tell two different chapters: first, several decades of use, then its preservation at its original location. The Gattersäge circular trail is also clearly defined: it leads from the municipal office via the Langwiesen access road, Klendorf and Wolfing to the sawmill. While the Ägidikirche circular trail is described by its route past the chapel, the Gattersäge circular trail specifies its starting point and the places along the way.

Commemorative Culture and Historic Transport Routes

Commemorative culture also has a clearly identified historical connection: the municipalities of Engerwitzdorf and Peilstein erected the Treffling memorial in 1990. It commemorates 18 people who were executed on 28 April and 1 May 1945. The year the memorial was erected and the occasion it commemorates belong to two different periods: 1990 marks its erection, while the dates in 1945 mark the events being remembered. Another, different historical trace is the horse-drawn railway that ran through the municipality of Engerwitzdorf. It adds transport history to the place-based themes. The two topics offer different perspectives: the memorial recalls specific people and events, while the horse-drawn railway recalls a historic transport route.

Cultural Life and the Meiche Collection

The Im Schöffl cultural centre opened in 2009. As a modern events venue, it is the hub of cultural life in and around Engerwitzdorf. KULTIK, the programme series run by the Treffling parish cultural meeting place, offers high-quality cultural events across various fields. If you’re planning your trip around a particular KULTIK event, check the programme before travelling. The Meiche collection comprises around 15,000 individual items. For culture enthusiasts, the difference lies in the type of offering: Im Schöffl and KULTIK focus on events, while the Meiche collection has its own distinct collection focus.
