Walding lies east of the Rodl, not far from its confluence with the Danube, in an ancient settlement area. There are two distinct highlights to consider when choosing a destination: a cultural history reaching far back in time and a range of specific sports activities. You can tailor your stay to whether you are particularly interested in historic traces, cultural events or getting active at the sports park.
Early Traces and Church History
Numerous Stone Age finds attest to prehistoric settlement in Walding. Mursberg is repeatedly mentioned in reports of prehistoric finds; Waltenstein Castle was one of the old fortifications on Mursberg. These historical points of reference span early traces of settlement and a specifically named site and its fortification.
The church dedicated to St Martin is one of the oldest churches in this area and was first mentioned in a document in 1143. The year marks its first documentary mention; the church is also considered one of the oldest in the region. The votive image “Maria Hilf” (“Mary Help of Christians”) is also part of the church’s history: it attracted numerous pilgrims from near and far and is still on the old high altar. Walding was a popular pilgrimage destination from 1765 to 1770.
Cultural Events and Sports in Town
For a different perspective on cultural life, the Walding Cultural Initiative organises around ten events a year. These include cabaret, readings and concerts. The programme therefore ranges from stage entertainment to literature and music. If a particular event is the deciding factor for your trip, check the current programme, as it may change.
Walding Sports Park offers two mountain biking options with different focuses. The MTB skills course has eleven obstacles for practising mountain biking techniques. There is also a permanent MTB trail that clubs and individuals can use for training and skills practice. In choosing between them, the course focuses on obstacles, while the trail offers training opportunities for both of the user groups mentioned. Current terms of use may change; check them before planning a specific visit.
The sports park also offers a range of activities beyond mountain biking: the skate park has ramps, a quarter pipe, a funbox and a jump ramp, and is free to use. Four asphalt curling lanes are available year-round for the sport of asphalt curling. At the Walding Sports Park climbing centre, floodlights make outdoor climbing possible until 10 p.m. If you plan to use any of these facilities, check the current terms of use and operating conditions in advance.
Wildlife Park and Getting There
At Walding Wildlife Park, Bimbi-Land offers children opportunities to play, learn and be active. If you are travelling with children, this is one specific option to consider when planning your stay. Walding Wildlife Park can be reached by bus or train to the Walding stop. Check current connections before setting off.
